State Games Wrestling Notepad
East County athletes excelled once again at this year’s wrestling tournament, held at Rancho Bernardo High School. In Saturday’s high school team tournament, Victor Richmond Jr. (Helix) and Renzo Salazar (Gateway West) placed second and third, respectively, in their 147-pound weight class while Valhalla’s Wade Templeton took third place in his 142-pound weight class. In Sunday’s youth freestyle tournament, Santee’s Christopher Bailey earned one of the two outstanding wrestler awards after winning his 80-pound Midget Division weight class. This year’s youth freestyle tournament also featured first-place finishes by Brendon Ray of the Sultans (Novice 75 pounds) and Spring Valley’s Walker Williams (Midget 71 pounds) and Vincent Richmond (Schoolboy 131 pounds). Brenden Shaffer of Santee (Rookie 60 pounds) and Shawn Miller of El Cajon (Schoolboy 105 pounds) both finished third in their respective weight classes.Medals were awarded to the top three competitors in each weight class. Bailey, who attends Hillcreek Elementary School, placed first in this year’s San Diego/Imperial Kids Wrestling Association finals en route to taking a third-place finish in the elite California/USAWrestling state championships. At last weekend’s State Games tournament, Bailey recorded pins in his first two trips to the mat before edging San Diego’s Lake Needham in two closely-contested matches for the gold medal.Vincent Richmond defeated Rancho Bernardo’s Ryan Milkovits in the double-elimination format, winning the pair’s first match-up by period scores of 7-4 and 4-2 and capturing the second bout by period scores of 7-0 and 3-0. The high school team tournament drew 220 entrants and included intense competition in several weight classes. The Enforcers All-Stars from Riverside captured the team title with seven weight class champions. The Enforcers entered three teams overall, with their second team, the Desert Enforcers, finishing in second place. The South County-based Hulk Wrestling Club finished third with one champion (Gustavo Ortiz of Chula Vista High School at 162 pounds).Poway’s Ryan Nasseri (127 pounds), Tim Boone (154 pounds) and Anthony Almanza (173 pounds) all captured gold medals to highlight the showing by San Diego County wrestlers.Nasseri earned additional honors as the tournament’s outstanding lower weight wrestler while Boone was named the tournament’s outstanding upper weight wrestler. Boone, who finished fifth in his 137-pound weight class at this year’s California high school state championship meet in March, was named the 2008 California State Games Wrestler of the Year.Nasseri defeated defending State Games champion Chad Thornock of the Enforcers by a 7-5 decision. Along the way, Nasseri defeated Poway teammate Anthony Alvarez, 3-2, in the semifinals. Boone recorded two pins and two technical falls in his four matches, defeating Clayton Schuelke of the Enforcers in the final. Victor Richmond Jr. placed first in his 137-pound weight class at this year’s Grossmont Conference II finals. He finished 3-1 in four mat appearances at this year’s State Games. His only loss was by 1:20 fall to defending State Games champion Matthew Melendrez of Cal High in the championship match. Richmond topped Tal Dahan of Beverly Hills by a 14-0 major decision in the semifinals.Salazar won his opening two matches by scores of 13-4 and 10-1 before dropping a match by 2:55 pin against Melendrez. Salazar then won both his matches in the consolation round to claim the bronze medal. Salazar out-pointed Dahan 13-5 for third place.Templeton (second at this year's Grossmont Conference finals at 132 pounds) advanced to the semifinal round where he lost to Morse’s Angel Garcia after opening with two strong wins. Templeton then pinned Morse’s Robert Alvarez in 1:45 before scoring a 7-2 decision against Dale Fodler of the Riverside Roadrunners in the bronze medal match.

Oritz, who starred on the mat last season for Chula Vista High School, paced the dozen or so Hulk Wrestling club members on the mat with his championship showing at 162 pounds. Ortiz was the Spartans’ “Golden Boy” last season, consistently placing at major sectionb-wide tournaments. He went undefeated in three trips to the mat at this year’s State Games tournament, scoring a 2:31 pin against Vista’s Kith Woods in his opening match and then topping Carlsbad’s Nick Heene by a 10-6 score in the semifinals. Ortiz ended his perfect day with a 6-2 decision in the championship round against his opponent from Riverside.Hilltop’s Angel Seville finished third at 105 pounds, Seville wrestled three times, dropping a 13-1 major decision to eventual weight class champion Heber Castillo of the Enforcers All-Stars and losing by a 3:44 pin to silver medalist David Layne of the Desert Enforcers. Seville recorded a 6-3 decision against Valley’s Jess Diaz in the bronze medal match. The Hulk’s David Cinco finished fourth in his 173-pound weight class, losing by fall to Rim of th World’s Clayton Elliott in the bronze medal match.Hulk Wrestling Club co-coach Dean Marlow said the summertime outing was a chance for wrestlers to get a competitive feel of what to expect this coming high school season.“We have kids from several schools. This is an opportunity for them to get some experience – just to come out and get some matches,” Marlow said.
