Nine East County matsters medal at prestigious ECI tournament

The El Cajon Invitational is the largest regional-style wrestling tournament in San Diego County and annually serves as a midseason barometer for success at the state championships.

Nine East County mat men persevered through the two-day tournament that wrapped up Dec. 29 at San Diego City College to earn precious medals — and valuable seeding points for post-season competition.

West Hills’ Endhyr Meza earned honors as the tournament’s outstanding upper weight wrestler by finishing with five pins in as many matches to win his 215-pound weight class. Meza was joined in the championship round by Valhalla’s Jordan Saunders, who finished second at 112-pounds to Rogers’ Bryce Evans , the tourney’s outstanding lower weight wrestler.

Meza and Saunders were joined in the semifinals by Steele Canyon 145-pounder Jacob Dunning, Steele Canyon 152-pounder Todd Graff and Helix 189-pounder E.J. Perkins while three other grapplers — Steele Canyon’s Jesse Cardenas (112), Grossmont’s Nick Travers (145) and West Hills’ Jared Baxter (189) — each won their opening two matches.

East County mat men took three of the eight award stand spots in the 112-pound division: Valhalla’s Saunders (second), Steele Canyon’s Cardenas (sixth) and Helix’s Dorian Cao (eighth). The 145- and 189-pound divisions each had two East County medalists.

Perkins finished third while Graff was fourth, Dunning and Baxter were fifth, Cardenas was sixth and Cao and Travers were eighth in their respective weight classes.

Meza, who was seeded third in his weight class, disposed of his third three opponents with relative ease by recording a 2:54 pin against Valhalla’s Ervin Hill, a 1:06 fall against Sultana’s Zachary Williams and a 28-second pin against Santana’s Chris Eidson. Meza then paired up against second-seeded Frank Bell of Bonita Vista in the semifinals where he scored a victory by a 4:51 pin to advance to the championship round against top-seeded Andrew Hudson of Redlands East Valley. Meza continued his run to the title with a 4:52 pin in the finals.

Saunders failed to receive a top eight seed but that didn’t seem to matter as he won his first four matches to qualify for the finals. Included in his run were a pair of major decision victories and one pin. He defeated Shadow Ridge’s Sean Mestas, 5-4, in the semifinals after upending Helix’s Cao, seeded third, in the second round by a 3:58 pin. Evans pinned Saunders in 2:42 for his fourth pin in five matches.

Perkins was seeded sixth but romped to the semis with an opening pins of 22 seconds and 1:02 and an 18-7 major decision against Poway’s Nick Sinacrope in the quarterfinals. Perkins lost by a 3:16 pin to second-seeded Jordan Kurth of Shadow Ridge in the semifinals before closing out the tournament with a pair of pins in the consolation bracket. Perkins topped West Hills’ Baxter, 9-7, in the consolation semifinals before defeating Leo Aranda of Cibola (Ariz.) by a 9-7 score in the battle for third place.

Graff won his first three matches to advance to the semifinals where he lost a tight 6-4 decision to Hoover’s Ty Eison, the eventual second-place finisher in the weight class. Graff bested Brawley’s Anthony Carmona, 6-5, in the consolation semifinals to advance to the third place match where he lost an 11-7 decision to Diego Sanchez of Cibola (Ariz.).

Dunning won his first three matches to advance to the semifinals where he suffered a 9-4 setback against top-seeded J.L. Mayo of Brawley. Dunning then lost a 9-6 decision to Eastlake’s David McCluggage in the consolation semifinals to drop to the fifth-place match where he defeated Sanger’s Josue Solis by a 6-3 decision.

Baxter won his opening two matches by scores of 14-2 and 11-5 before suffering a loss in the quarterfinals by 5:49 pin to Cibola’s Aranda. Baxter fought off elimination with a 14-7 victory against Orange Glen’s Eward Pietrenka and then edged Ripon’s Travis Smith by a 5-4 decision to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. After suffering a two-point loss to Helix’s Perkins, Baxter defeated Westview’s Isaac Rodriguez, 10-6, in the match-up for fifth place.

Cardenas finished 4-3 in the tourney with one major decision victory and one pin. His 8-2 loss to Shadow Ridge’s Mestas in the consolation semifinals dropped him to the fifth-place match where he lost by a 7-0 decision to Mike Zellner of Bonanza.

Cao won his first match by pin but lost to Valhalla’s Saunders in the next round to drop to the consolation wrestle-backs where the Highlander grappler won three single-elimination matches, including a 20-3 technical fall, 3:40 pin and 17-6 major decision, to qualify for the medal round. Cao was relegated to the seventh-place match after a 7-2 loss to Steele Canyon’s Cardenas in the consolation quarterfinals. Sanger's Rico Cruz tout-pointed Cao, 10-8, for seventh place.

Travers opened his mat odyssey with pins of 3:07 and 1:55 before suffering a quarterfinal loss by a 20-second fall against eventual weight class champion Tyler Button of Phoenix, N.Y. Travers won his consolation match by a 2:40 pin before losing by a 2:42 fall to Eastlake’s McCluggage in the consolation quarterfinals. Travers finished eighth after an ensuing default loss to Overfelt’s Victor Saldana.

Steele Canyon and Helix both recorded top 20 finishes — tops among East County entrants — in the 50-plus team tournament.

Steele Canyon, which finished 15h, had three medalists: Graff (fourth, 152), Dunning (fifth, 145) and Cardenas (sixth, 112).

Helix, which finished 19th, had two medalists: Perkins (third, 189) and Cao (eighth, 112)

West Hills (two medalists) tied for 21st place with Overfelt while Valhalla (one medalist) finished in 26th place and Grossmont (one medalist) finished in 31st place. Santana was 37th, followed by Mt. Miguel (42nd), El Cajon Valley (45th) and El Capitan (48th).

Phoenix (N.Y.) captured the team championship with seven medalists, including three weight class champions. Cibola (Ariz.) finished second in the team standings with eight medalists while Sultana (Hesperia) was third with six medalists (including one champion).

Rancho Buena Vista, with six medalists and one champion, carried the torch for San Diego Section schools with a fourth-place team finish. Poway, fielding a lineup of mostly back-up wrestlers after winning the prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions title the previous week, finished sixth after fifth-place El Dorado.

Brawley, with five medalists, finished third among section teams and 11th overall.

Evans won the outstanding lower weight award with four pins and a major decision.

Though the list of top teams may have suffered a reduction from the previous year, the competition at the 2009 ECI was exceedingly tough from the quarterfinals onward. That 12 San Diego Section wrestlers advanced to the championship round, with three winning weight class titles, bodes well for the region in post-season competition.

Joining Meza as 2009 ECI champions were Central Union’s Micah Perez (103) and Rancho Buena Visata’s Matt Reed (189). Perez edged Brawley’s Arthur Carmona, 4-3, in an all-section match-up while Reed edged Shadow Ridge’s Jordan Kurth by a score of 6-5. Reed remained undefeated on the season at 14-0. Top-seeded Carmona advanced to the final with two pins and a 16-0 technical fall while second-seeded Perez advanced with two pins and a 10-5 minor decision.

Brawley led the section with four finalists – all of whom finished second in their respective weights. Joining Carmona with runner-up finishes were teammates Angel Carrillo (130), Mitchell Maya (140) and J.L. Mayo (145). Mayo lost 9-4 to Tyler Button of team champion Phoenix (N.Y.) while Carrillo and Maya both lost to out-of-town wrestlers as well. Carrillo dropped his finals match to Thousand Oaks’ Behdod Katebian while Maya dropped his finals match to El Dorado’s Charles Chavez.

Poway had two finalists: Chad Gregory (125) and Austin Crider (171). Both finished second. Gregory lost by a technical fall to Redlands East Valley’s Chris Mecate while Crider dropped a 15-1 major decision to Austyn Hayes of Phoenix (N.Y.).

Also securing runner-up finishes were Hoover’s Ty Eison (152) and San Marcos’ Jarrod McGehee (160). McGehee lost 6-2 to Natomas’ Carlo Chavez while Eison was edged by a 6-4 decision by Caleb Wallace of Phoenix (N.Y.).

Overall, the San Diego Section medalled 41 wrestlers — 37 percent of the field.

RBV took home the fourth-place trophy with six medalists. Joining champion Reed with medals were teammates Robin Case (third, 275), Nik Boyd (fourth, 103), Jesus Ambriz (fourth, 215), Neil French (sixth, 171) and Sean Pollock (seventh, 152)

Sixth-place Poway had six medalists. Joining the Titans’ two finalists were fellow medal winners Maudin Latifi (third, 145), Josh Miranda (fourth, 119), Justin Chua (fourth, 130) and Sinacrope (seventh, 189).

Anthony Carmona (fifth, 152) rounded out 11th-place Brawley’s stable of five medal winners.

Rising North County small schools power San Marcos, which finished 16th, had four medalists. Joining runner-up McGehee were teammates Emilio Rivera (third, 130), Simon Olguin (fifth, 135) and Drasko Bogdanovich (sixth, 152)

Westview, which finished 25th, had three medalists: Adam Terry (fourth, 285), Mike Manuche (sixth, 125) and Isaac Rodriguez (sixth, 189)

Among South County teams, Eastlake (one medalist) finished 17th in the team standings, followed by Bonita Vista (one medalist) in 24th place and Hilltop (three medalists) in 27th place. Otay Ranch was 34th, followed by Mater Dei Catholic (tied for 49th).

Eastlake’s David McCluggage (145) placed fourth while Bonita Vista’s Bell (215) was fifth. Hilltop’s three medalists included David Ramirez (fourth, 160), Joseph Kent (fifth, 140) and Roman Flores (eighth, 152).

Four more schools each had one medalist: Valley Center’s Alec Morgan (fifth, 160), St. Augustine’s Jeffery Eaker (sixth, 135), Scripps Ranch’s Cody Gratas (eighth, 135) and Santa Fe Christian’s Paul Winfield (eighth, 140).

Five area matsters medal at prestigious ECI

Hilltop’s David Ramirez (160 pounds) and Bonita Vista’s Frank Bell (215) both advanced to the championship semifinals while three other grapplers — Eastlake’s David McCluggage (145) and Hilltop’s Joseph Kent (140) and Roman Flores (152) — each won their opening two matches.

McCluggage and Ramirez, each using different paths, engineered fourth-place finishes while Kent and Bell grabbed fifth-place finishes. Flores placed eighth.

McCluggage won three consolation matches to advance to the third-place match while Ramirez lost 10-8 in the semifinals to eventual weight class champion Carlo Chavez of Natomas. Bell lost in the semis to West Hills’ Endhyr Meza, who was named the tournament’s outstanding upper weight wrestler.
