Men of Steele continue to impress on the mat

Posted Jan. 14, 2008
With a win Thursday at Valhalla, the Steele Canyon wrestling team can firmly establish itself above the rest of the Grossmont South League. The Cougars took a big step toward becoming not only a legitimate contender – but perhaps the favorite – to win this year’s league dual meet title after defeating visiting Monte Vista, 39-27, on Jan. 10.

Steele Canyon won eight of the 14 matches, including four by pin and three by major decision.

The Cougars got pins from Dylan Lincoln (112), Connor Young (145), Ryan Esquibel (171) and Kyle Manis (215). Caleb Cardenas won by 8-0 major decision against Monte Vista’s Persio Morel at 119 pounds while Todd Graff was victorious at 140 pounds with a 12-2 major decision and Angel Ramirez won at 152 pounds by a 14-4 major decision.

In perhaps the dual’s highest profile match, Steele Canyon’s Dylan Sawyer defeated state qualifier Hunter Beamon by a 7-4 decision at 125 pounds.

Monte Vista had three pins in the cross-town rivalry match-up: Masud Hassan (130), Shamar Barnes (160) and Pepe Martinez (heavyweight). Levi Annon (103), Shervin Iraniha (135) and Kenneth Tribble (189) all won by minor decisions.

The win by Martinez over Robert Forester (seventh at the El Cajon Invitational, third at the Monte Vista Invitational) was also a rankings twister in the 285-pound class.

The teams battled to a draw last season, with the host Monarchs winning a tie-breaker.

Thursday's dual meet starts with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 7 p.m.

Falcon Invitational
Steele Canyon continued its strong start by placing second at the Scripps Ranch/Mission Hills Invitational, held Jan. 11-12 at Mission Hills High School.

Four Cougars made it to finals: Cardenas (119), Cody Rowland (130), Esquibel (171) and Forester (heavyweight). All placed second in their respective weight classes.

Cardenas finished runner-up to Morse’s Angel Garcia in the 119-pound division by a 4-2 decision while Esquibel dropped a 12-0 major decision to Sutter Union’s Jon Garcia at 171 pounds.

Both Rowland (130) and Forester (285) lost by fall in their respective finals against Sutter Union’s Timmy Nevarez and Ramona’s Ryan Stone.

Other place-finishers included Graff (seventh, 140), Ramirez (seventh, 152) and Lincoln (eighth, 112). Graff decisioned Valley Center’s Anthony Woolstencroft, 5-0, while Ramirez captured a 7-6 battle from Torrey Pines’ Robert Parrish. Lincoln finished on the short end of a highly competitive 5-3 decision against El Camino’s Junior Mathys.

The Cougars were in the tournament team points lead until the finals when they were overtaken by Sutter Union, which finished with a 17.5-point margin of victory. Steele Canyon finished 23.5 points ahead of third-place Brawley, 24 points ahead of fourth-place Rancho Bernardo and 30 points ahead of fifth-place Valley Center.

Also among East County individuals, Grossmont’s Danny Demas placed third in his 285-pound division after recording a 9-0 major decision against Scripps Ranch’s Brendan Edwards while Helix’s Victor Richmond also won by 9-0 major decision (against Mira Costa’s Karsten Kaczmar) to claim fifth place at 140 pounds.

Dual meets
In other duals on Jan. 10, Granite Hills defeated Helix, 44-30, in a South League encounter while West Hills topped El Cajon Valley, 48-29, in North League action.

Victor Castro (125), Wes Fulkerson (130) and Jacob Castillo (160) each won by pin for Granite Hills.
