Posted Jan. 25, 2007
Granite Hills' Zach McClanahan captured first place in the 103-pound weight class at the San Pasqual Invitational Jan. 20 at San Pasqual High School. McClanahan defeated Ramona's Waldo Saldivar by a 15-4 major decision in the championship match.

Four East County grapplers took third-place in the tournament: West Hills' Josh Carbajal (140) and Nick Gilchriest (145), Santana's Blake Kahler (171) and Granite Hills' Justin Phillips (189).

Kahler defeated Ramona's Anthony Dugan, the champion of the 52-team Falcon Invitational the previous week, by a 16-7 major decision to finish third.

Phillips, who qualified for finals matches at both the regional draw San Diego Holiday Classic and El Cajon Invitational tournaments earlier this season, defeated Patrick Henry's Malcolm Coleman to claim third place.

Granite Hills finished ninth in the team standings.

Ramona (185), Mt. Carmel (174.5), Rancho Buena Vista (142.5), Escondido (120), San Pasqual (115.5), Valley Center (111), Scripps Ranch (93) and Torrey Pines (86) all finished ahead of the Eagles. Patrick Henry (68) finished 10th.

Most Valuable Lightweight honors went to Ramona's Chris Kirk (112) while Torrey Pines Curtis MacKay (160) earned Most Valuable Heavyweight award.

Three South Bay mat men won weight class titles. Mar’s Allan DeLos Reyes (119) and Tommy McLaughlin (215) and Montgomery’s Pedro Tapia (125). Montgomery’s Gideon Hemesath finished second in his 135-pound division to give the Metro Conference four finalists in the tournament.

DeLos Reyes recorded a 12-2 major decision against San Pasqual’s Bryce Jarman while Tapia won an 8-7 thriller from Escondido’s Matt Rhedden and McLaughin pinned Ramona’s Jarrett Pierece in championship-round matchups.
