Battle by the Beach Wrestling Tournament
Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007 at Mar Vista High School

Monte Vista's Hunter Beamon pins Brawley's Chase Aleksick in 125-pound semifnals.

Beamon sets goal on state; Monarchs set goal on league, CIF titles

IMPERIAL BEACH, Dec. 1, 2007 -- Monte Vista’s Hunter Beamon enjoyed a spectacular sophomore season by wrestling all the way to the state championship tournament in Bakersfield. Beamon, then competing at 103 pounds, finished with an imposing 38 wins and 34 pins, placed second at the San Diego Section Division III championship tournament and third at the ensuing San Diego Section finals.

His junior year was one fraught with illness and injury, as well as a growth spurt that catapulted him into the 125-pound weight division. Beamon racked up nearly 30 wins but his losses doubled.

He placed fourth at the Division III finals and failed to crack the top eight place-winners in his weight class at the San Diego Masters state qualifying tournament.

His junior season wasn’t necessarily one to forget but rather one to build on. Still at 125 pounds this season, Beamon has settled into the heavier weight class and appears ready to resume his quest to return to the state finals.

“I grew from 5-2 to 5-10 last year and had a knee injury,” Beamon said in recapping his junior season. “It was kind of hard to shoot. My whole style was mixed up. I had to rely on other things. At the time of the injury, I was doing well – better than my sophomore year. I want to make it to state again and place this time. I want to be top three in Masters. In CIF, I want to win it.”

A two-time Grossmont Conference individual champion, Beamon faced off his senior year by winning the 125-pound title at the Battle by the Beach tournament, held Dec. 1 at Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach. Beamon pinned Mar Vista senior Allan Delos Reyes in 2:27 in the championship match – one of four pins in as many trips to the mat in the 23-team tourney.

Beamon opened the tournament with a 34-second fall and added a 1:33 pin in his second match before pinning Brawley’s Chase Aleksick in 2:57 in the semifinals.

Beamon was one of six Monarchs to make the finals, with teammate Shervin Iraniha winning his 135-pound weight class with an 8-6 decision against Brawley’s Mason Rodriguez, the top-seeded wrestler in the division. Monte Vista edged runner-up Brawley by nine points to capture the team title.

The Monarchs look to have a good season if they stay injury-free.

“During the next several weeks, we want to make a good showing heading into the Temecula and Five County tournaments, get ready for CIF and keep pace with Brawley. I think they’re the front-runners,” Monte Vista coach Steve Bulette said.

The Monarchs totaled 230 team points in the Mar Vista mat fest to the Wildcats’ 221 points. Brawley sent four grapplers to the finals – “not enough” in coach Tony Leon’s words – and came away with three individual tourney titles.

Finishing second in their respective weight classes for Monte Vista were Levi Annon (103), Persio Morel (119), Masud Hassan (130) and Pepe Martinez (heavyweight).

Brawley’s individual champions included Swayer Smith (112), Alex Trinidad (145) and Adam Espinoza (189). Trinidad was named the tournament’s outstanding middle weight wrestler.

Iraniha was seeded sixth in his weight bracket but defeated third-seeded Hugo Medrano of Mar Vista by an 8-3 decision in the quarterfinals and then dropped second-seeded Wyatt Castner of Valley Center to the consolation wrestle-backs with a win in the semifinals.

Annon finished with the fastest pin award after recording a 10-second fall in the quarterfinals.

Monte Vista is set to dual Brawley Friday, Dec. 14, in Brawley, with junior varsity matches scheduled to start at 5 p.m. It will be a busy week for the Monarchs, who dual El Cajon Valley on Dec. 13 and then will participate in a quad dual Dec. 15 at San Pasqual High School against Hilltop, Mira Mesa and the host Golden Eagles.

The front-heavy schedule appears in place to set the tone for what expects to be a fierce battle for the 2007-08 Grossmont South League title. Valhalla won last year’s dual championship but Steele Canyon won the ensuing championship tournament title. Monte Vista won a tie-breaker from Steele Canyon in their dual.

“I think it’s us, Valhalla and Steele Canyon for the league title,” Bulette said.

El Cajon Valley, with an exceptionally strong showing, finished 12th in the Battle by the Beach team standings.

The Wolf Pack finished 38th in the team standings, just ahead of fellow East County rival Granite Hills (42nd). Valhalla placed 29th, though the Norsemen did not record any top eight individual place-winners. Poway won the team title with nine placers (including five champions) while La Costa Canyon, buoyed by four place-finishers, managed to crack the top 10 list with a ninth-place team finish. Ramona was 23rd with one champion: heavyweight Ryan Stone. Poway’s weight class champions included Ryan Nasseri (103), Henry Yorba (130),Tim Boone (135), Ian Daube (171) and Chris Crosthwaite (215). Metro Conference report:

Hilltop's Martinez sets goals, looks to collect medals

Hilltop’s Javier Martinez has set two goals for his senior season: to make weight and win the state championship in his 140-pound weight class.

All that lies in between, he said, “will take care of itself.”

“My first goal is to make weight,” he said. “My second goal is to win state. Those are my two goals. Winning league and CIF will be in between.”

Martinez qualified for last year’s state tournament in Bakersfield, finishing 39-9 overall after winning the 145-pound title at the Division II finals. He placed third in the weight at the San Diego Section Masters state qualifying tournament and went 1-2 at the state meet.

Qualifying for the state meet as an underclassman was everything for Martinez, giving him a glimpse of what it takes to be successful at that ultra-elite level. He’s back for his senior year with the intent of stepping onto the awards stand at the end of the grueling two-day tournament.

The Hilltop grappler took his first step toward that goal by winning the 140-pound weight division at last Saturday’s Battle by the Beach tournament at Mar Vista High School. Martinez went undefeated in his weight class in preseason competition while also running cross country to improve his conditioning. The result was a 4-0 showing with two major decisions and one pin on the mat in his debut tourney performance.

Martinez recorded a 12-7 decision against Southwest’s Joseph Amavisca in the finals. Amavisca was seeded third in the weight class but pulled off an upset 1:50 pin against second-seeded Victor Richmond in the semifinals. Martinez, who also won by scores of 14-2 and 10-1 to go with a 4:46 pin in the quarterfinals, was one of seven top-seeded wrestlers of win weight class titles at the Battle by the Beach tournament.

Amavisca, who appears to have come into his own this season, recorded three falls en route to his finals appearance.

“I had some tough matches at the beginning. I had a tough finals match,” Martinez said.

Martinez was joined by Hilltop teammate Mike Reyes at the top of the award stand after Reyes captured his 119-pound division with a series of upset wins. Seeded fifth, Reyes toppled, in order, the weight bracket’s fourth-, first- and second-seeded wrestlers, winning an injury default decision from Monte Vista’s Persio Morel in the finals.

Reyes earned the outstanding lower weight award for his impressive run through the bracket. He captured a 13-11 semifinals decision against top-seeded A.J. Agustin of Helix.

As a team, the Lancers posted a strong fourth-place finish. Angel Seville (103), Andy Galata (145) and Jerry Santillan (215) all posted third-place finishes in the 23-team tournament while Anthony Salinas (112) and Nick LaBrenz (189) both placed fifth in their respective weights.

Hilltop boasts seven varsity returners this season and looks in strong position to defend its South Bay League title.

Overall, seven Metro Conference matsters advanced to finals matches at last weekend’s Mar Vista tournament. Also advancing to championship-round matches and finishing second in their weights were Mar Vista senior Allan Delos Reyes (125), Montgomery sophomore Joseph Kent (152), Chula Vista’s Roman Molina (189) and Mar Vista senior Tommy McLaughlin (215).

Delos Reyes lost a match by 2:27 pin to Monte Vista senior Hunter Beamon, a state qualifier as a sophomore, while Kent dropped a 10-3 decision to Poway’s Alex Brown, Molina dropped a 6-4 overtime decision to Brawley’s Adam Espinoza and McLaughlin suffered a 12-5 loss to Central Union’s Angel Romero.

Kent and Molina were top-seeded in their respective weights.

Mar Vista finished sixth in the team standings. Hugo Medrano (135) and Joey Rilatt (152) both captured third-place finishes for the tourney-host Mariners.

Metro Conference Preview

Mar Vista Mariners
Team captains include seniors Tommy McLaughlin, Allan Delos Reyes and Hugo Medrano. McLaughlin and Delos Reyes were both Metro Conference finalists last season, with McLaughlin winning his 215-pound weight class and Delos Reyes placing runner-up at 119 pounds. McLaughlin went on to place second at the Division III championships while Delos Reyes was third. At Masters, McLaughlin finished fifth while Delos Reyes posted a top eight place-finish. Medrano was injured last season but placed sixth at the division finals as a sophomore.

Other top returners include juniors Joe Rilatt, Chris Barnett, Danny Medrano, Joseph Westby, Angelo Pilatto and Mathew Tyson. Medrano (112) was fourth at the Metro finals.

Impact newcomers include freshmen Max Uribe, Carter Barnett, Rommell Cooper, Thomas Castillo and Eric Ludwig, sophomore Rowan Guyton and juniors Paul Evans, Izzy Covarrubias and Dustin “Buzz” Breding.

A lot of potential describes this year’s MV squad, according to team members.

“We’re a young team but the younger kids have a lot of potential,” Delos Reyes said.

“I feel like we have a very good team this year,” McLaughlin said. “I believe we can do great things and maybe win a banner.”

Said Hugo Medrano: “Our team has a lot of potential this year. I expect great things next year.”

The Mariners faced off the season with a 48-36 non-league dual loss to defending Mesa League champion Bonita Vista and placed sixth in the 23-team Battle by the Beach tournament the following weekend.

Montgomery Aztecs
The Aztecs look to build as the season progresses, according to coach Jay Coffey. “We are young, so there is a lot of improvement needed. We expect to do well by the end of the season,” he said.

Top returners include senior Hector Hernandez and sophomore Joseph Kent. Hernandez did not wrestle last season but placed sixth at the Division II finals and second at the Metro finals for Castle Park in 2005-06.

Other returners include senior Karleen Ronsairo, juniors Armando Viramontes, Michael Vera, David Valenzuela and sophomore Vincent Hemesath.

Newcomers looking to develop as the season progresses include seniors Jesus Villegas, Jonathan Villanueva and Stephen Enriquez, who will fill in the upper weights. Freshmen starting their mat careers include Manny Quiambao, Scott Baker, Alan Coats, Kevin Custeau, Juan Mattioli. Sophomore Matthew Real also is counted among the team’s newcomers.

Kent finished second in his 152-pound division at the season opening at Battle at the Beach.
