University City Centurions
Season Preview 2005-2006

Head Coach - Kevin J. Farmer
Asst. Coach - Jeret Needham

Top Returners

Kyle Lawson - Senior- 135/145 lbs
Last year - 25-18, 1st team All-Western League; 3rd City Conference, 6th CIF, 3-2 at Masters; 3rd Jag Shoot-out, 4th Mira Mesa.

Career - With 54 wins overall (27 pins), Kyle has the most wins of any UC wrestler back. His 41 varsity victories are 2nd most. As a sophomore he was 6th in City and 8th at CIF.

Comment - Kyle had an outstanding season last year, despite some nagging injuries toward the end of the season. His big heart became evident as he stepped up during the post-season, avenging earlier losses and advancing farther than expected. His only losses at Masters were to state qualifiers Zach Peterson of Poway and Greg Cohen of Vista. He is a returning co-captain.

Ryan Reiger - Senior- 145/152 lbs
Last year - 23-15, 1st team All-Western League; 5th City Conference, 6th CIF, 8th SD Holiday, 4th Mira Mesa, 1st Jag Shoot-Out.

Career - With 46 wins, Ryan returns with the most varsity victories. He has 50 overall victories, 34 by pin. He is in his third year as varsity captain and fourth year on varsity. As a sophomore he qualified for Masters after finishing 6th at CIF.

Comment - Ryan has had an outstanding career at UC, as a wrestler and a leader. Last year he could have advanced farther in the post-season but nagging injuries failed to allow him to wrestle up to his full potential.

Michael Haynes-Pitts - Senior- 189/215 lbs
Last year - Mike returns after posting 17 victories a year ago. 6th CIF, 6th City Conference and 3rd at Jag Shoot-Out. He barely missed placing at the San Diego Holiday and Jim Londos Memorial Tournaments.

Comment - Mike came up strong for UC last year, qualifying for Masters after finishing 6th at CIF. Even more is expected this year. Mike gave up a promising football career at UC this year to concentrate fully on wrestling.

Brian Lewis - Junior- 112/119 lbs
Last year - Because of eligibility problems, Brian wrestled just nine times in 2004-05. Included in those limited matches was an 11-5 victory over St. Augustine’s Blade Olson, the 1st team All-Western League 103-pound selection, to take 5th at City Conference.

Career - As a freshman Brian took a 3rd at the Ivan Olson Tournament and a 4th at the Helix JV tournament. He moved up to varsity at the end of the season, finishing 8th at CIF.

Comment - Grades should no longer be a problem for Brian as he has rededicated himself both in the classroom and on the mat. He had a disappointing CIF last year after a very unfortunate draw. He lost to top-seeded Scott Bergmann of Serra and second-seeded Robert Grey of Monte Vista to be denied a chance to go to Masters.

Jan Sales - Sophomore- 119/125 lbs
Last year - 8-8 varsity last year. 2nd Jag Shoot-out.
Comment - Lost any chance for post-season accolades when he was injured in the final dual meet of the season. He came in last year with no experience but his outstanding physical talent and quick learning made him one of our top lightweights.

Shaun Stafford - Senior- 135/145 lbs
Comment - Shaun is a four-year varsity wrestler. His experience should pay off big for him this year, after just missing double digits in victories a year ago.

Impact Newcomers

Chad Campbell - Junior - 135/145
Had an impressive 13-6 record on JV last year including a 1st place finish at the Eastlake JV Tournament.

Kelvin Crosby - Senior - 160/171
19-9 overall last year, including a 12-4 mark on the junior varsity. He was a varsity regular two years ago as a sophomore. Filled in at varsity last year at the San Diego Holiday Tournament and missed medaling by one victory. Medaled at Eastlake and Ivan Olson at the JV level.

Phillip Johnson - Junior - 112/119
Posted a 12-12 overall record last year. Took 3rd at the JV Jag. A very athletic lightweight who just needs time to perfect his moves.

Leif Ljungquist - Senior - 215/275
Blessed and cursed by being the same weight as state qualifier Lars Lucear the past two years. He was 11-11 overall last year, but his greatest lessons came in the practice room taking on Lucear. Now it is his time to shine. Was 2nd at the JV Jag.

Cassius Matthis - Sophomore - 112/125
He came out of the box as a freshman on fire, placing 2nd at the Jag Shoot-out and sixth at Mira Mesa. His season was cut short as an injury ended his season after the Mira Mesa Tournament. A lot is expected of this talented, young athlete if his mental focus can match his physical ability.

Carl Pasquale - Junior - 171/189
In my mind Carl is the most talented wrestler on the team. He has all the physical skills and learns quickly. Unfortunately classroom problems have kept him from reaching the goals expected for him. Last year in limited varsity action he was 6-2.

Patrick Struthers - Senior - 160/171
Patrick was a varsity regular last year but unable to crack the line-up last year regularly. Overall he posted 20 victories last year - 14-4 JV and 6-4 on varsity. He was the champion last year at the Ivan Olson J.V. Tournament.

Chris Mead - Senior - 189-215
Part of our outstanding depth in the upper weights this year. Chris was 15-7 a year ago on JV and will be in the war to find a spot in our upper weights this year.

Kenny Bostwick - Senior - 189/-215
One of the top wrestlers in the classroom and it shows on the mat as well. Few wrestlers pick up moves as quickly as Kenny. Has varsity experience.

Daniel Barrios - Senior - 152/160
Came out for the first time as a junior and showed great potential. Posted 8 victories last year, JV and varsity combined.

Casey Nakamura - Junior - 189/215
Another first-timer a year ago. An extremely tough competitor who will be in the running for a varsity spot this year.

Monsoor Paghmani - Junior - 135/-145
A first timer last year who worked extremely hard in the off-season. I look for Monsoor to display the most progress of any wrestler coming back this season.

Thomas Tighe - Senior - 215/275
Limited experience over the past few years, Thomas came to off-season workouts in the best shape of his career and looks ready to make an impact this year.

Season Outlook
Coach Kevin Farmer:
What was once was an extremely optimistic viewpoint looking at the experience and depth expected of this year's squad, turned into a huge challenge just to fill-out a line-up. First it will be tough to make up for the graduation of Lars Lucear, Corey Nakamura, Boian Spassov, Kristian Padilla and Joe Cruz. Lucear leaves after posting 40 and 39 victories over the past two years respectively. On top of those losses many wrestlers counted on for depth, chose not to return to the program this year. Eligibility also took away some from the line-up. Ryan Reiger and Michael Haynes-Pitts are returning Masters qualifiers who we will be counting on heavily this year. If we can keep them healthy and everyone on top of their schoolwork, we can still have a great season. Our main team goal is to get back the Western League title we lost to Mission Bay last year by two points. As for CIF, it will be a monster the way it looks now with team champs Brawley, Valhalla and Mt. Carmel all slated to be in Division III with us. The best thing about it is we are to host the event. Helping us get ready for such a tough challenge is we'll be facing the toughest dual meet schedule in school history. Among dual meets we¹ll have this year include Ramona, Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Mar Vista, and Valley Center.
