Super Bowl champions: a timeline
Under the current playoff format in the National Football League, the winner of the AFC Championship Game meets the winner of the NFC Championship Game in the Super Bowl, thus serving as the NFL’s championship game. After the World Cup in soccer, the Super Bowl is likely the most prestigious sporting event in the world; it is certainly the highest-profile sporting event in the United States. But the Super Bowl did not always carry the prestige it does today. In its first four incarnations from 1967 to 1970, prior to the merger of the American Football League and the NFL, the contest was known as the AFL-NFL Championship Game.
