GSL title is Valhalla Norsemen's to win after 28-14 victory over Helix
El Capitan moves one victory closer to repeating as GNL champion
Posted Nov. 2, 2009
With two games left in Grossmont South League play, the league's football championship title appears to be the Valhalla Norsemen's to win after the Rancho San Diego team upended defending league champion Helix, 28-14, on Oct. 30. The homecoming game victory pushed Valhalla's GSL record to 3-0.
The Norsemen (6-2 overall) lead the Steele Canyon Cougars (2-0-1 in league play, 5-2-1 overall) by one-half game in the GSL standings and the Mt. Miguel Matadors (1-1-1, 5-2-1) by one-and-a-half games after the Cougars and Matadors played to a 21-21 tie, also in pre-Halloween action.
Valhalla can secure the rights to this year's league title with a victory at Steele Canyon in the teams' annual battle for the Jamacha helmet on Nov. 6 and a Mt. Miguel loss to visiting Monte Vista. Should both the Cougars and Matadors win their next games, Valhalla would be forced to defeat Granite Hills in its regular season finale on Nov. 13 to claim the championship banner.
A Steele Canyon victory for this year's Jamacha helmet would push the drama to the final week of the season for all three teams.
Traivonne Brown scored three rushing touchdowns and Pete Thomas threw a 47-yard scoring pass to Mike Bazzi to pace the Norsemen to their fifth consecutive victory.
Jake Reed tossed a pair of touchdown passes for Helix, which entered the game against 13th-ranked Valhalla ranked 10th among the San Diego Section teams. The Highlanders fell to 1-2 in league play, 5-3 overall, with the setback -- their second consecutive in GSL play.
The Norsemen led 21-7 at one point against the Scotties.
Mt. Miguel kept its championship hopes alive when A.J. Stanford completed an eight-yard scoring pass to Willie Morales for the only score in the fourth quarter. The Matadors took an early 14-0 lead on a nine-yard scoring run by Stanford and a 36-yard punt return by Natone Morgan, both touchdowns coming in the first quarter.
But Steele Canyon responded with 14 unanswered points of its own when quarterback Brad Boehmke threw touchdown passes to Taylor Mishler (12 yards) and Cody Simpson (54 yards) in the second quarter. The Cougars then went ahead, 21-14, when Boehmke scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter.
For playoff seeding purposes, Mt. Miguel won the overtime tiebreaker should the teams finish with the same regular season record.
Meanwhile, El Capitan continued defense of its Grossmont North League title with a 42-26 victory at El Cajon Valley. The Vaqueros improved to 3-0 in league play, 5-4 overall, and need a regular season-ending victory against the West Hills Wolf Pack (1-0-1, 4-3-1) on Nov. 6 to officially wrap up this year's championship title.
Matt Burkett scored four touchdowns to lead El Capitan, which broke open a tight game on the scoreboard with the only two touchdowns of the fourth quarter. The Vaqueros entered the final quarter nursing a close 28-26 lead.
In other games, Grossmont (1-1, 3-5) kept its hopes for a GNL co-championship in working order by defeating Santana (0-3, 2-7) by a score of 35-13, while Granite Hills (0-3, 3-5) saw its Division I playoff chances dip after coming up short in a GSL match-up against Monte Vista (1-2, 2-6).Maurice Payne rushed for 241 yards and scored three TDs to lead the Monarchs to their first league win this season.
Desean Waters set a Grossmont single-game rushing record with 333 yards while scoring five touchdowns.
San Diego Section Playoff Ticker
Division I
Six teams have winning records: La Costa Canyon (8-0), Eastlake (6-0-2), Rancho Bernardo (7-1), Escondido (6-1-1), Vista (6-2) and Chula Vista (5-3). Mira Mesa is 4-4 while Torrey Pines is 3-4-1, Granite Hills is 3-5 and Sweetwater is 3-6. Teams to watch: Rancho Buena Vista and Otay Ranch are both 2-5-1 while Carlsbad is 2-6. All three teams have played challenging schedules and could qualify for postseason competition with losing records.
Division II
Ten teams have winning records: Oceanside (8-0), Bonita Vista (6-2), Mission Hills (6-2), Valhalla (6-2), Lincoln (5-2-1), Helix (5-3), Scripps Ranch (5-3), Southwest El Centro (5-3), Morse (5-3) and West Hills (4-3-1). Orange Glen is 4-5, followed by Grossmont, Hilltop and Westview, all at 3-5. Mt. Carmel is 3-6 but has played a challenging schedule, giving the playoff selection committee a minor headache in rounding out the 12 qualifying teams. Valhalla is a contender for top four seeding.
Division III
Ten teams have winning records: Ramona (7-1), Brawley (7-1), Cathedral Catholic (7-1), St. Augustine (6-2), Mt. Miguel (5-2-1), Steele Canyon (5-2-1), Serra (5-23), Hoover (5-3), Point Loma (5-3) and El Capitan (5-4). Montgomery is 4-4. The race seems to be on for the final playoff berth between five teams: San Marcos (3-5), Mar Vista (3-5), Castle Park (2-6), Kearny (2-6), and Monte Vista (2-6). Serra upset St. Augustine in non-league play to scramble the seeding among top teams, possibly allowing Steele Canyon and Mt. Miguel to both secure first-round byes. Monte Vista might be the best 2-6 team in the division while Mar Vista owns a stunning 33-19 non-league win over longtime Division V power Bishop's.
Division IV
Seven teams have winning records, including three with undefeated records: Mission Bay (8-0), Olympian (8-0), Valley Center (8-0), Madison (7-1), Santa Fe Christian (7-1), Central Union (6-2), Escondido Charter (6-2). Contenders for the division's final five berths include six teams: Coronado (4-4), Palo Verde (4-4), Clairemont (3-5), La Jolla (3-5), Imperial (3-5) and Santana (2-7). Santana has an edge over Imperial with a 42-0 non-league victory but dropped a 24-13 non-league encounter against Central Union.

Mesa League Report
Kiwanis Bowl continues to deliver community pride
Posted Nov. 4, 2009
The Chula Vista-Hilltop football rivalry has certainly seen better days but that does not mean that the Chula Vista Kiwanis Bowl — the west side rivalry’s current incarnation — has lost its luster.
The first to defend that notion is Spartan coach Judd Rachow, whose Chula Vista team ran its record in the eight-game series to 7-1 following last Friday’s commanding 49-18 victory at Joseph Rhindone Stadium.
“It’s a big deal for the players,” said Rachow, whose team improved to 5-3 on the season, 3-0 in Mesa League play, with the victory. “There’s a lot of school pride at stake. It doesn’t matter what the score turns out to be. The kids like playing in this game.”
The brainchild of the Chula Vista Kiwanis Club, the Kiwanis Bowl is all about recognizing community. The club donated $750 to each team. Most Valuable Offensive and Defensive Players of the Game also were selected for each team.

South Bay League Southern League |
Chula Vista’s MVPs included quarterback Victor Perez (offensive) and linebacker Thomas Tutogi (defensive) while Hilltop’s MVPs included quarterback Omar Hernandez (offensive) and running back Shafiq Memon (defensive).
Perez threw a pair of touchdown passes while also scoring on a two-yard run while Hernandez also lofted two scoring passes in the game. Tutogi scored two touchdowns on offense, including a 49-yard romp that made the score 42-12 in the Spartans’ favor in the third quarter. Aaron Taylor caught both TD passes from Perez while Anthony Stanislaus scored on two touchdown runs, also for Chula Vista.
The Spartans led 28-0 after the first quarter. Taylor and Perez hooked up on a 33-yard scoring play for the game’s first touchdown before Stanislaus ripped off TD runs of five and 61 yards and Tutogi scored on a three-yard run.
Matt Kuehn scored Hilltop’s first touchdown on a 26-yard aerial from Hernandez but that was answered by Taylor’s second TD catch of the game — this time for 31 yards to make the halftime score 35-6 in Chula Vista’s favor.
Hernandez connected with Sergio Martinez on a 16-yard TD strike for the first points of the second half. But the Spartans quickly responded with a pair of TDs to put the score out of the Lancers’ reach.
Hilltop’s Martinez scored on a 61-yard fumble return in the fourth quarter to close out scoring in the game. The play was a weird one, as the ball was fumbled several times between the teams before Martinez finally latched onto it and sprinted down the home sideline to the end zone.
Perez completed eight of 11 passes for 127 yards while the Spartan ground game amassed 237 yards on 25 carries for 364 total yards in the game. Stanislaus led the CV rushing attack with nine carries for 100 yards while Tutogi had six carries for 89 yards and Giovanni Vicente had six carries for 35 yards. Taylor totaled four catches for 90 yards while Bobby Hatchett made two grabs for 20 yards and Josh Leon had one catch for 13 yards. The Spartan offense was otherwise a model of efficiency.
Defensively, 20 players contributed tackles in the game. Tutogi led Chula Vista with nine stops while Jeff Ayers made six tackles. Three other Spartans had five tackles each: Stanislaus, Lucky Manu and Andrew Klistoff. Chula Vista recorded five sacks, two interceptions and recovered two fumbles. Gilbert Navarro had two sacks while Leon, Tutogi and Klistoff each had one sack apiece. Tutogi and Andrew Salas each had one pick while Leon had two fumble recoveries.
Perez punted once in the game, nailing a 41 yarder.
Chula Vista now prepares for Friday’s homecoming match-up against the Otay Ranch Mustangs (1-2, 2-5-1) while Hilltop (0-3, 3-5) travels to Mater Dei (0-3, 1-7).
The Spartans have now matched their earlier three-game losing streak with a three-game winning streak that has seen them out-score their opponents 150-39.
Perez has thrown for 1,299 yards and 18 touchdowns and is averaging 162.4 passing yards per game. Stanislaus leads the team with 474 rushing yards on 83 carries while Tutogi has carried the ball 60 times for 373 yards. Taylor has made 18 catches for 344 yards while Hatchett has 15 catches for 317 yards. Tutogi and Taylor lead the team with nine touchdowns each while Stanislaus has scored eight TDs and Hatchett has six. Tyrone Richardson has scored five times this season while Perez has four rushing scores to his credit.
Tutogi is averaging 12 tackles per game.
Chula Vista appears to have a solid Division I playoff berth in hand and is now playing for home field advantage. The Spartans close out regular season play with a Nov. 13 game at Eastlake — a match-up that is quickly taking shape as this year’s Mesa League championship game.
“Even though we’ve won a few games now, we still feel there’s room for improvement in some areas,” Rachow said.
Hilltop will be out to end what has become a five-game losing streak and resurrect any playoff chances the team may have at this point. There are currently 10 teams with winning records in the Division II standings. The Lancers are one of five teams with losing records that have a realistic chance of qualifying for post-season play.
Hernandez entered the game with 1,010 passing yards and seven TDs while also leading the team with 416 rushing yards on 52 carries with six touchdowns.
Mesa League preview:
Barons, Titans renew their battle for the boot
The trophy isn't all that impressive but to members of the Bonita Vista Barons and Eastlake Titans football teams, it is the prize that players from both squads talk about winning from the opening day of the season. This year's match-up takes place Friday at 7 p.m. at Southwestern College.
Defending Mesa League champion Eastlake is favored but anything has been prone to happen in this east side rivalry game — one that matches teams with a combined 12 wins this year.
The Titans are undefeated on the season at 6-0-2, ranked third among San Diego Section teams and currently sport a perfect 3-0 league record. The Barons are 6-2 on the season, 2-1 in league play.
Eastlake has won six consecutive games after kicking off the season with a pair of ties.
Both teams are coming off lopsided league victories last Friday. The Titans stomped Otay Ranch, 42-7, while Bonita Vista defeated host Mater Dei Catholic 30-0.
Chris Fletcher paced Eastlake with four touchdowns, including three rushing scores and a 70-yard pass play from quarterback D'Angelo Barksdale. All-American Tony Jefferson scored on a 46-yard run that made the halftime score 35-0 while Daniel Diaz rounded out the Titans' scoring on a 13-yard run in the third quarter.
Fletcher scored on runs of one, 10 and 11 yards en route to racking up 62 rushing yards in the game on five carries. Jefferson gained 129 yards on 11 carries while Diaz rushed for 37 yards on five attempts.
Barksdale completed six of 10 passes for 174 yards. Fletcher had two catches for 101 yards.
Otay Ranch avoided a shutout loss when Danny Azhocar scored on a two-yard run to close out scoring in the game in the third quarter.
Jefferson has rushed for 1,083 yards and leads the Titans with 14 touchdowns while Barksdale has passed for 1,367 yards and nine TDs. Fletcher has 19 catches for 455 yards and ranks second on the team with 12 TDs.
For the second consecutive season, the Barons have been saddled with a number of untimely injuries and one has to wonder just how good they would be with everyone in the lineup healthy.
Four players scored touchdowns in last Friday’s victory: Waheed Olayan (eight-yard pass from Joel Gutierez), Greg McGhee (55-yard pass from Gutierez), Bryan Montreuil (60-yard run) and Chris Moore (32-yard interception return). Ruben Vasquez also kicked a 25-yard field goal.
The Barons led 17-0 at halftime.
Gutierez passed for 87 yards while Montreuil rushed 10 times for 117 yards and McGhee had three receptions for 81 yards.
On the season, Gutierez has passed for 635 yards while Montreuil has rushed for 784 yards. McGhee has caught 30 passes for 345 yards. McGhee leads the team with seven touchdowns while Gutierez has thrown eight TD passes and scored four rushing TDs.
South Bay League Report
Olympian grounds Red Devils 41-14; could 10-0 season be in the making?
After last Friday’s 41-14 victory at Sweetwater that all but gives this year’s South Bay League championship title to the Olympian Eagles, it is time to start talking about an undefeated 10-0 campaign.
The Eagles (8-0 overall, 5-0 in league play) close out South Bay League play with a game Friday against visiting Southwest (1-7, 1-4). Olympian then hosts the Horizon Christian Panthers (2-6 overall) in a non-league finale on Nov. 13.|
The burning question right now is whether the Eagles have enough pull to secure a top four seed in the upcoming Division IV playoffs and a bye to the quarterfinals.
The top end of the Division IV standings reads like a field of dreams: Mission Bay (8-0), Valley Center (8-0), Santa Fe Christian (7-1) and Madison (7-1).
Mission Bay plays Serra this Friday with a chance to capture the Western League title while Madison is the front-runner in the Central League. SFC saw its perfect season ended on Saturday with a 31-20 Coastal League loss to Francis Parker. Valley Center will play Oceanside for the Valley League title.
Should the Eagles be excluded from a top four seed, they would almost certainly host a first-round playoff game.
That was essentially determined by last Friday’s win over the Red Devils (3-6, 3-2). Olympian started with a 7-0 first quarter lead but quickly increased the tempo thereafter to lead 28-0 at halftime.
Ryan Van Nostrand completed three touchdown passes to lead the Eagles, who also received touchdowns from Alex Cornist (three-yard run), Corbin Humphery (55-yard fumble return) and Dre Gibson (85-yard TD scamper). Van Nostrand spread his scoring passes to three receivers: Eric Paranada (19 yards), Hollis Hulin (19 yards) and Justin Gaskin (21 yards).
Sweetwater scored both its touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Van Nostrand completed eight of 17 passes for 122 yards while Gibson rushed seven times for 107 yards
Van Nostrand has 671 passing yards on the season while Cornist leads the team with 497 rushing yards, closely followed by Ian Autman with 494 rushing yards and Gibson with 305 rushing yards. Cornist has 13 catches for 189 yards while Guillermo Flores has 10 catches for 113 yards.
Southwest topped visiting San Ysidro, 35-8, last Friday to end a season-long losing streak. David Leon scored three touchdowns to lead the Raiders, including an 82-yard punt return, 49-yard breakaway run and 14-yard pass reception.
For those keeping track, Horizon lost 53-34 to Bishop’s on Saturday to drop to 0-3 in Coastal League play.
The Red Devils close out regular season play with a game at San Ysidro (0-4, 1-7) on Nov. 13 with a Division I playoff spot unlikely at this point.
Olympian failed to qualify for last year’s Division IV playoffs despite posting a 6-4 regular season record, so there is much to prove on the Eagles’ part in their upcoming two games.

Ex-Trojan Sampson shines in SDSU win over Colorado State
Posted Oct. 29, 2009
Former Castle Park High standout DeMarco Sampson posted career numbers in helping lead San Diego State University to a 42-28 Mountain West Conference victory over the Colorado State Rams last Saturday in Ft. Collins, Colo. Sampson, a senior wide receiver, caught 15 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns as the Aztecs rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to post the clutch come-from-behind road victory.
Sampson had 12 receptions that went for first downs and 11 that went for more than 10 yards. He had three catches for 72 yards on SDSU’s game-winning drive in the fourth quarter, including the winning touchdown on a 38-yard catch.
Aztec quarterback Ryan Lindley (El Capitan) threw six touchdown passes while racking up 459 passing yards. Sampson and Lindley shared this week’s MWC Offensive Player of the Week award.
Sampson, who also was nominated for All-America Player of the Week honors, registered personal career and single-game highs in the win over the Rams. His previous best had been five catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-28 loss to then 18th-ranked BYU on Oct. 17. The ex-Trojan has 20 catches for 334 yards and five touchdowns in his last two games.
“I’ve dreamed of this, but I think I was happier when I saw some of the younger guys score,” Sampson said in post-game interviews. “It is a great feeling to see us gel together.
“It’s amazing when your coaches believe in you because it makes a big difference. When the whole team believes in you, it makes you want to play every down like it is your last down.
“I believe our team has come together as a real team and we are going to fight until the end.”
SDSU (1-2 MWC, 3-4 overall) kicks off a rare three-game home stand with a Halloween matinee conference match-up against New Mexico (0-3, 0-7) at Qualcomm Stadium. Start time is 4:30 p.m.
The Aztecs’ three wins surpass or equal those recorded in four of the last nine seasons while SDSU’s 3-4 start is its best since 2005.
