San Diego Hall of Champions names all-spring sports teams

Posted June 27, 2009
The San Diego Hall of Champions recently announced its Breitbard All-San Diego Section teams for the 2009 spring sports season. The Breitbard All-CIF teams are the official All-CIF teams of the San Diego Section.

The list includes seven players from the Metro Conference: Montgomery senior Abraham Torres (baseball), Otay Ranch senior Omar Gonzalez (baseball), Hilltop junior Alysha Isaacson (softball), Otay Ranch senior Alfred Haslerig (boys track and field), Mar Vista senior Zach Penolio (boys volleyball), Otay Ranch senior Nick Morales (boys volleyball) and Bonita Vista’s Kevin Gorman (boys golf).

Torres, Haslerig, Penolio and Gorman all were recognized as first team selections while Gonzalez, Isaacson and Morales were all named as second team picks.

Torres earned honors as the 2009 South Bay League Pitcher of the Year while helping the Aztecs claim a share of the league title and advance as far as the San Diego Section Division II championship game. Montgomery finished second in the division for the second consecutive year to top-seeded Cathedral Catholic.

Torres finished the season with a 10-1 record, 0.85 earned-run average and 86 strikeouts.

The Aztecs finished 24-9 overall, 10-2 in league play.

Gonzalez, an infielder, batted .430 with 33 runs scored, eight home runs and 42 runs batted in while helping the Mustangs capture this year’s Mesa League championship. He was subsequently named the Mesa League Player of the Year.

Otay Ranch was not eligible for the section playoffs, however, because of 12 forfeits during non-league play. Teams with five or more forfeits in baseball are not allowed to compete in post-season play. However, because the forfeits occurred before the Mustangs began league play, the team’s Mesa League record was not affected.

Otay Ranch finished 9-1 in league play, 12-19 overall (including forfeits).

Isaacson finished 15-6 in the pitching circle with a 0.65 ERA while guiding the Lancers to a runner-up finish in Mesa League play. She racked up 124 strikeouts against 11 walks and completed 19 games. At the plate, she batted .415 with 30 RBI, 12 doubles, two triples and three home runs as the Mesa League Player of the Year.

Haslerig clocked a school record time of 1:53.38 to win his event at the section finals after previously setting a school record in winning the 800 run at the Mesa League finals. A state qualifier, he was named the Mesa League Track Athlete of the Year.

Penolio was named the South Bay League boys volleyball Player of the Year while helping the Mariners claim the league title.
Morales was named the Mesa League Player of the Year while helping the Mustangs win the Mesa League title.

Both Otay Ranch (10-0) and Mar Vista (12-0) went undefeated in league play.

Gorman earned first team all-section honors as one of the top 20 finishers in the section finals.

Spiking it South County-style
Six Metro teams win CIF playoff openers

Posted May 27, 2009

When sports teams talk about “the second season,” they are referring to the playoffs — a place that usually hasn’t been too hospitable to South County high school teams as far as staying power is concerned.

That changed for the better this year as six Metro Conference teams won their opening playoff game — five in the first round and one byed to the quarterfinals.

This year’s field of playoff qualifiers included eight Metro teams: Mesa League champion Otay Ranch (Division I), Eastlake (Division II), Bonita Vista (Division II), Hilltop (Division II), South Bay League champion Mar Vista (Division III), Montgomery (Division III), Southwest (Division III) and Mater Dei (Division IV).

Playoffs started May 19 for Division I and Division III teams and May 20 for Division II and Division IV teams. Quarterfinals followed on May 22 for Division I and Division III teams and May 23 for Division II and Division IV teams.

Semifinals took place Tuesday for Division I and Division III teams and Wednesday for Division II and Division IV teams.
Twelve teams were entered in each division.

The divisional championship finals are scheduled Saturday at Cathedral Catholic High School. The order of games includes Division IV (1 p.m.), Division III (3 p.m.), Division II (5 p.m.) and Division I (7 p.m.).

Awards will be presented to the championship and runner-up teams in each of the four enrollment divisions. Individual patches will be awarded to members of the championship teams and individual silver medals will be awarded to members of the runner-up teams.
Otay Ranch has qualified for the playoffs the past five years. The Mustangs have also begun to prolong their stay in this most promised of all sports lands with four consecutive trips to the quarterfinal round.

Otay Ranch captured its fourth consecutive league championship title this spring — second straight in the Mesa League — to qualify for the Division I playoffs. The Mustangs advanced to the quarterfinal round for the fourth consecutive year by defeating the visiting Mission Hills Grizzlies in a first-round contest on May 19. The 3-0 sweep in games (25-22, 25-22, 25-19) landed sixth-seeded Otay Ranch a rematch against the third-seeded Torrey Pines Falcons in quarterfinal-round action on May 22.

Nick Morales led all players in the playoff victory against Mission Hills with nine kills, while Nico Pizarro and Jason Guarnes each had five kills for Otay Ranch, which improved to 19-16 overall. Omar Marquez, Melvin Holper and Nathan Allen all contributed three kills. Ivan Ibarra had three blocked shots while Dillon Wulff led the team with 18 assists and teammate Marvin Rabanal had 10 assists. Manuel Gutierrez led the victors with 10 digs while Guarnes and Wulff each contributed five digs.

The Falcons defeated the Mustangs 3-0 in games in the opening match of the 2009 season and but found themselves in a battle in the playoffs, winning in four hard-fought games 23-25, 25-16, 26-24, 25-19.

The Mustangs led 24-21 in the third game but could not close it out with a win.

Morales led Otay Ranch with 26 kills while contributing seven digs and four blocked shots, Guarnes followed with 10 kills and 11 digs while Dillon Wulff had 41 assists.

Bonita Vista topped Orange Glen 25-21, 25-23, 14-25, 25-23 in four games behind 20 kills by Shalamar Buchanan, 15 kills and 11 digs by Ryan Hoggard, eight kills by Zachary Sanchez and 52 assists by Gabriel Lopez.

The Barons ended their season after being swept in three games by second-seeded Valhalla in quarterfinal action.

Eastlake rallied to defeat Steele Canyon in five games to win its opener 25-17, 21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-10. The Titans then fell to top-seeded Mt. Carmel.

Mater Dei received 10 kills from Aldo Loera, six kills from Jose Martinez and 15 assists from Alfredo Brambilla in its first-round win over Coronado 25-22, 27-25, 27-25. The Crusaders lost in three games to top-seeded Francis Parker to close out the season.

Montgomery went five games against Kearny before prevailing 17-25, 25-23, 21-25, 30-28, 15-12. The Aztecs lost to No. 1 Cathedral Catholic in the quarterfinals.

Mar Vista, seeded No. 2 in Division III, swept University City in its quarterfinal opener 25-17, 25-19, 25-23 but was stalled in a bid to advance to the finals with a five-game loss to No. 3 La Jolla in Tuesday’s semifinals. The Mariners were eliminated 19-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 15-12 despite holding an edge after three games.

The Metro Conference Senior All-Star Games are scheduled for Thursday, June 4, at Otay Ranch High School. The format pits the South Bay League against the Mesa League. The girls match is at 5:30 p.m. The boys match follows at 7 p.m.

Thursday, June 11: San Diego County Senior All-Star Game; Girls match at 5:30 pm and Boys match at 7:30 pm at Francis Parker

Posted May 26, 2009
The 2009 San Diego Section boys volleyball championship tournament will come to a climactic end for eight teams Saturday at Cathedral Catholic High School as four division champions are crowned. The Valhalla Norsemen, owners of this year’s Grossmont South League championship title, looked to be in the running after advancing to Wednesday’s Division II semifinals.

The Norsemen drew the No. 2 seed in the Division II field and hosted Bonita Vista in a quarterfinal-round match-up on May 23, winning in three straight games 25-14, 25-16, 29-27.

The win boosted Valhalla (24-4) against third-seeded Westview (12-19) in the semifinals, with the winner challenging the winner of Wednesday’s other semifinal match-up, either top-seeded Mt. Carmel (22-7) or Scripps Ranch (14-19), in Saturday’s division title contest.

Granite Hills qualified for the Division I playoffs while Valhalla, Grossmont, West Hills and Steele Canyon all qualified for the Division II playoffs. Monte Vista also advanced to post-season play, qualifying in the Division III field.

Granite Hills finished the season 12-5 overall.

Grossmont North League champion Grossmont eliminated visiting Hilltop 22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 in a highly competitive four-game match-up in first-round action.

Jake Haar (23 kills, 14 digs) and Graham Hajosy (20 kills) led the offensive attack, followed by teammates Alex Ortiz (nine kills, 12 digs) and David Shevlin (seven kills, 16 digs).
