Barons, Mustangs advance to CIF girls water polo playoffs

Posted Feb. 19, 2009
The Bonita Vista Barons and Otay Ranch Mustangs were the only two Metro Conference teams to gain entry into this year’s San Diego Section Division I girls water polo playoffs.

The Barons qualified as the conference champion after finishing 12-0 in league play. The Mustangs were admitted on an at-large basis on the strength of their second place league finish (10-2) and 19-6 overall record.

Bonita Vista, which finished 21-4 overall, received the No. 11 seed in the 16-team Division I field but, as a league champion, hosted sixth-seeded El Camino (15-14) in Thursday’s scheduled first-round playoff game at the Las Palmas pool in National City.
Otay Ranch, seeded 13th, was scheduled to travel to fourth-seeded Mt. Carmel (22-8) in Thursday’s opening round of the playoffs.

Quarterfinal-round action is scheduled Saturday in both Division I (1:30 p.m. start) and Division II (8:30 a.m. start) at La Jolla High School.

Barons splash to 10-0 Metro mark
Posted Feb. 5, 2009

The wins keep coming for the Bonita Vista High School girls water polo team and an apparent Metro Conference title in the process.
The Barons have been busy racking up wins against their South Bay rivals: 12-1 against Hilltop on Jan. 22, 13-3 against Chula Vista on Jan. 27, 15-6 against Mar Vista on Jan. 28 and 12-5 against chief challenger Otay Ranch on Tuesday.

Bonita Vista improved its league record to 10-0 with two games remaining and improved its overall record to 17-4, with three of the four losses by one goal.

Leading scorer Carly Hakes had seven in the win against Mar Vista and six in the victory over Otay Ranch. Sarah Skinker has lent valuable offensive support, scoring six goals in the win over Hilltop and four each against Mar Vista and Otay Ranch.

Meanwhile, Liz Crocker has helped solidify the team’s goaltending. She had 11 saves against Mar Vista and seven saves against Otay Ranch.

Tuesday’s contest was an intense rivalry match between Bonita Vista and Otay Ranch.

Jessie Yim, Jesse Yamagata and Ariel De La Fuente were key defensive players for the Barons by holding the Mustangs scoreless in the second quarter and allowing only one goal in the third quarter. Hakes scored five unanswered goals in the second quarter, including one after drawing a five-meter ejection. Crocker was a major force as well with seven saves. She also blocked a five-meter attempt in the final quarter.

San Diego Open
Bonita Vista finished 3-1 in the San Diego Open Tournament. The Barons defeated Helix (14-4), Westview (12-11) and Santana (9-5) and lost to El Dorado (9-8). The win over Santana made amends for a loss to the Sultans in the Winter Classic Tournament.

Hakes had 26 goals for the tournament, while Sarah Skinker scored 16 goals and Crocker had 42 goalie saves. Hakes has scored 116 goals to date this season, including 12 goals on five-meter ejections she has drawn.

The Bonita Vista and Otay Ranch high school girls water polo teams appear headed for a climactic second-round match-up on Feb. 3 that very well could determine which team earns this year’s Metro Conference championship title outright or whether one of them will share it.

The Barons edged the Mustangs, 11-8, in a first-round encounter on Jan. 8. Since then, Bonita Vista has followed with league wins against Southwest (13-0), Chula Vista (13-1) and Eastlake (15-8) to complete the opening round of league play undefeated.

The Barons entered the week 9-3 overall.

The Mustangs held a 5-2 lead at halftime over Hilltop but opened up a comfortable cushion by racking up a 6-2 goal differential in the third quarter to lead by seven goals entering the final quarter.

Otay Ranch opened defense of its East County Invitational title by defeating Santa Fe Christian and Monte Vista by respective scores of 9-4 and 7-4 in Monday's opening round of competition.

Abby Wirsching paced the Mustangs in the two tournament games with four goals, three assists and six steals while Kelsey Eaton made a personal record 14 saves in the game against SFC.
Should Otay Ranch (4-1 in league, 12-3 overall) defeat St. Joseph’s of Long Beach on Friday, the Mustangs will advance to the medal round.

Alex Sanchez leads the Mustangs on the season with 55 goals, 31 steals and eight assists while Wirsching has 32 goals, 42 steals and 14 assists and Cecy Inzunza had 23 goals, 54 steals and five assists.
