Mustangs spike way to top of league standings

The Otay Ranch High School girls volleyball team completed the first round of Mesa League play with an undefeated 5-0 record after defeating the Mater Dei Crusaders 25-13, 25-19, 25-14 on Oct. 21. Karina Heredia led the Mustangs with 20 kills while contributing 10 digs and three aces. Sarah Campos had 32 assists and five aces while Karen Pereda had 13 digs and three aces. Sasha Feredoni had 11 digs.
Otay Ranch improved to 16-12 overall, inclusive of its fifth-place finish at the SoCal Invitational, held Oct. 18 at Granite Hills High School.
The Mustangs defeated Chula Vista 25-4, 25-12, 25-18 on Oct. 16 to improve to 4-0 in Mesa League play. Heredia led Otay Ranch against the Spartans with 13 kills and nine aces while teammate Asia Machitar had seven kills. Campos contributed six aces for the Mustangs.
It’s evident it’s been a team effort this season for Otay Ranch.
The Mustangs improved to 3-0 in league play by defeating Hilltop 25-20, 25-11, 22-25, 25-16. Kills leaders included Heredia (19), Lauren Clark (10), Machitar (six), Kortney Regan (six) and Jessica Bobadilla (four). Campos paced the team with 40 assists while Lesly Solis and Samantha Gallardo collected seven and five aces, respectively. Pereda led Otay Ranch with 14 digs while Heredia and Feredoni each had 11 digs.
The Mustangs scored a huge win on Oct. 9 when it stopped Eastlake by scores of 25-23, 26-24, 25-15. Heredia led Otay Ranch with 14 kills while Campos had 22 assists, Pereda had 17 digs and Solis had three aces.
Otay Ranch opened league play with a 22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 victory over Bonita Vista on Oct. 7.
Heredia showcased her game with 23 kills and 22 22 digs while Campos had 38 assists and Gallardo had six aces. Pereda had 17 digs for the Mustangs, who also got 10 kills from Clark
Otay Ranch placed fifth at the Granite Hills SoCal Invitational on Oct. 18. The Mustangs finished 2-1 in pool play against Valhalla (3-0), Linfield Christian (1-2) and Morse (3-0) to qualify for the opening round of the playoffs, defeating San Dieguito Academy 27-25, 18-25, 20-18.
The Mustangs drew Christian in the quarterfinals, dropping two straight games by scores of 25-22 and 25-21.
Christian defeated Bullard in two straight games in the semifinals to the championship round, placing runner-up to tourney champion Fallbrook.
