At the onset of the 2008 high school football season, few might have thought that the Bonita Vista Barons and Patrick Henry Patriots would be squaring off this Friday at Southwestern College with both teams sporting undefeated records. But that is indeed the case and, barring a tie, one team will be halfway to a potential 10-0 regular season mark when the final whistle sounds.

Bonita Vista, despite a sluggish start, improved to 4-0 by defeating Mt. Miguel, 31-0, last Friday at SWC.
Patrick Henry whizzed past visiting Hoover, 21-7, last Friday to also hike its record to 4-0.

The Barons branded the victory against the Matadors with defense, forcing four turnovers and sacking Mt. Miguel signal-caller DeJay Nolen six times.

Senior A.J. Jimenez personally recorded three of those sacks and also returned a fumble 37 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to seal the win.

BV coach Carl Parrick admitted his team’s offense “sputtered at times.” But there were flashes of brilliance thrown into the mix as well. If the Barons can put a complete game together, they could be a force in the upcoming Mesa League championship race.

Andrew Grimes caught two fourth-down passes on the host’s opening scoring drive in the first quarter, the last grab on fourth-and-21 where he beat the Matadors’ defensive back and sprinted untouched 35 yards down the sideline.
A fumble by BV quarterback Hector Castellanos gave Mt. Miguel the ball on the host’s eight-yard line. The Matadors further moved their way to the six-yard line before the Baron defense overwhelmed Nolen on a drop back and forced a fumble, recovering the ball in the process to end the visitors’ best scoring chance of the night.

Bonita Vista made the score 14-0 just before halftime as Bryan Montreuil rumbled in from one yard out.
The Barons tacked on 17 more points in the third quarter to put the game away.

Ruben Vasquez kicked a 46-yard field goal to increase the BV lead to 17-0, Jimenez returned a fumble to make the score 24-0 and Spencer Hunter caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Castellanos to make the final score 31-0.

Castellanos finished the game by completing nine of 17 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Grimes caught four passes for 79 yards and one touchdown while Spencer Hunter had three catches for 33 yards and one score.
On the ground, Montreuil rushed 11 times for 44 yards while Ibrahim Hassan carried the ball seven times for 24 yards.

The Bonita Vista defense generally contained Derall Hunter, the Matadors’ big ground-gainer, by limiting him to 95 yards on 20 carries. Besides Jimenez, Hector Arambula Esteban Guitlan and Victor Simpson were each credited with sacks while Arambula had one forced fumble, Armando Lopez and Daniel Scanlon each were credited with fumble recoveries and Kelan DeLaRosa was credited with one interception.

Nolen finished the game with 153 passing yards but rushed seven times for minus-25 yards. Felix Deleon had six catches for 46 yards while Willie Morales caught five passes for 41 yards.

As for Patrick Henry? Just how good are the Patriots?

William Dabbert rushed 25 times for 141 yards and scored on runs of five and 43 yards to pace the Patriots’ offense in halting the Cardinals’ three-game winning streak. Duarte Jones also caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Farley.

On the season, Dabbert has rushed for 469 yards and scored five rushing touchdowns while Jones has 18 catches for 288 yards and has scored a total of four touchdowns.

In three games, Farley had thrown for 270 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions.

Titans top Titans in 21-20 thriller

Posted Oct. 8, 2008
There might be some argument from fans of both the Bonita Vista Barons and Otay Ranch Mustangs, but it would appear that the defending Mesa League champion Eastlake Titans have posted the best showing at the midpoint of the 2008 high school football season by any of the Metro Conference’s 13 teams.

Eastlake kicked off the season with a three-point loss to defending state champion Oceanside, currently the No. 1-ranked team in the San Diego Section and made a statement with last Friday’s thrilling 21-20 non-league win against defending Division I champion Poway.

At 3-2, the Titans have taken their share of lumps and bruises but have a week off before opening league play with an Oct. 17 homecoming match-up against Hilltop.

The win over Poway in a gridiron battle dubbed the “Clash of the Titans” because both teams sport the same nickname has to be regarded as a morale booster. It marked the second time in as many weeks that Eastlake scored in the waning minutes to record a victory.

It’s said that good teams somehow find a way to win. Whether that translates into another league title for the Titans remains to be seen with impending match-ups against good Bonita Vista (4-0), Otay Ranch (2-1-1) and Chula Vista (2-2) squads -- noble adversaries that sports a combined 8-3-1 record.

Tony Jefferson scored on a one-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to rescue Eastlake from a 20-14 deficit. Jefferson finished the game with two touchdowns after rushing 22 times for 115 yards. He gave Eastlake a 7-6 lead when he scored on a 16-yard run in the opening quarter.

Quarterback James Billburg needs to get an assist on the game-winning touchdown. It was his fourth-down pass to Robert Graves that kept the visitors’ drive alive. Billburg, playing in his third consecutive game after starter DeAngelo Barksdale was sidelined by an injury, completed seven of 11 attempts for 86 yards. He was intercepted twice.

Graves had two catches for 28 yards. A total of six Eastlake players caught passes in the game, with Jefferson, Randall Williams, Emilio Rangel, Daniel Diaz and Chris Kane all making one reception. Williams had the longest catch of the night at 34 yards.

Eastlake held a 14-12 halftime lead when Williams returned a kick-off 87 yards for a touchdown.

The South County visitors also used some timely defense, as Eddie Viega recovered a fumble after Poway had driven to the Eastlake 23-yard line.

The hosts held the lead three times in the game at 6-0, 12-7 and 20-14. Poway QB John Jensen-Johnson passed for 186 yards and three touchdowns. Jensen-Johnson connected with Brett Thomas on two first-half scoring plays (six and 25 yards) and also hit Connor Ulshoffer on a 55-yard bomb in the third quarter.

Poway missed the point-after touchdown conversion on its first score and failed on a two-point conversion try on its second touchdown.

Jefferson has rushed for 399 yards on 76 carries, with nine rushing touchdowns and 10 total TDs in five games. Williams has rushed for 244 yards on 37 carries, with two rushing touchdowns and five total touchdowns (including two on kick-off returns). Williams has five catches for 181 yards and one score.

Diaz has rushed for 157 yards on 32 carries and has 11 catches for 92 yards.

As a team, Eastlake has rushed for 838 yards (5.34 average per play) and passed for 438 yards (11.84 yards per catch).

Barksdale has 19 completions in 36 attempts for 258 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Billburg has 16 completions in 35 attempts for 176 yards and four interceptions.

Kicker Kris Almario has made 14 of 15 PAT conversions and has hit on two of four field goal attempts, with a longest field goal of 42 yards.

Jefferson leads the Eastlake defense with 41 solo tackles, 16 assists, one sack and one interception (for a touchdown) while Patrick Jarin (22 solo tackles, 28 assists) and Marcus Mendillo (30 solo tackles, 25 assists, one sack) rank in a second-place tie.

Mustangs fall from undefeated ranks
Otay Ranch saw its three-game unbeaten streak to start the season halted via last Friday’s 42-14 home field loss to second-ranked Cathedral Catholic. The defending Division III champion Dons bolted to a 35-0 halftime lead. Tyler Gaffney, a contender for the section's Offensive Player of the Year award, rushed for 165 yards and scored on an 80-yard touchdown run of the first play of the second half. Cathedral Catholic quarterback Parker Hipp completed five of seven passes for 87 yards, hitting Brad Harrington for a pair of TD catches.

The Mustangs (2-1-1) avoided a shutout on quarterback Juan Leary's five-yard scoring run in the final minute of the third quarter; Lonnie Bickham II scored on a four-yard run in the final quarter.

Leary entered the game averaging more than 154 yards passing and 108 yards rushing per game but against the Dons' potent defense was held to 64 pasisng yards (10-of-19) and minus-seven rushing yards.

Marian Catholic 62, San Ysidro 20
The Crusaders wrapped up non-league play with a resounding victory to snap a three-game losing streak. Andres Schramm (10 carries, 138 yards) scored three rushing touchdowns, Carlos Gonzalez (eight carries, 80 yards) scored two rushing touchdowns and quarterback Jake Marrion threw a pair of touchdown passes to Will Stewart to pace the Crusaders' offensive attack.

Jason Myers kicked eight PAT conversions and booted a pair of field goals (31 and 30 yards) for 14 kicking points in the game for Mater Dei, which owned a 38-20 halftime lead. The Crusaders shut out the winless Cougars (0-4) 24-0 in the second half of play.

Marcel Pitre rushed 10 times for 80 yards and scored on a one-yard run to round out the Crusaders' scoring. Stewart caught scoring passes of 58 and 30 yards and totaled three catches on the night for 126 yards.

Tremaine Mitchell (16 rushes, 133 yards) scored two touchdowns to lead San Ysidro, which also received 177 rushing yards and one touchdown from Josh Morrison. Cougar QB Paulino Gonzales completed all five of his passes for 33 yards.

San Ysidro kicks off South Bay League play by hosting Olympian (1-0, 4-1) this Friday while Mater Dei will enjoy a bye week before tackling its Mesa League opener against visiting Chula Vista on Oct. 17.

Santana 35, Hilltop 34
The visiting Lancers (1-4) racked up their highest-scoring offensive effort of the season, only to see a missed extra point on their final touchdown to keep them from a tie game. Chris Prather caught scoring passes from Seth Fadden and Patrick McGrath to highlight Hilltop's offense.

Fadden passed for 122 yards and rushed for 129 yards to average nearly seven yards per play. Prather had three catches for 117 yards, including an 11-yard scoring pass from Fadden in the third quarter and an 83-yard TD pass from McGrath in the fourth quarter.

McGrath (16-yard run), Jeremy Rodriguez (two-yard run) and Bryant Vivanco (one-yard run) each scored one touchdown in the game for the Lancers, who have a bye until opening Mesa League play Oct. 17 at Eastlake.

Zach Breidt rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead the Sultans (3-2). Kris Kimmel rushed for 81 yards and one touchdown and had six catches for 66 yards. Kyle Hayes (five-yard run) and Junior Nunez (18-yard reception) both scored one touchdown for the victors, who received five PAT conversions from Josh Van DeVrugt. Breidt completed 17 of 28 passing attempts for 196 yards with one TD and two interceptions.

South Bay League Report
Olympian Eagles fly to 4-1; believe it after 28-0 shutout victory over Mar Vista

Posted Oct. 8, 2008
One down and bigger challenges to follow. That sums up the Olympian Eagles' 28-0 victory over visiting Mar Vista in last Friday's South Bay League match-up for both teams.

The Eagles -- 0-6 in league play a year ago -- are clearly savoring their 1-0 SBL standing this season. But Olympian faces bigger and better teams as league play unfolds. Next up is an away game at San Ysidro (0-0, 0-4) this Friday.

Mar Vista, which has been outscored 214-62, is 0-5 on the season.

The Eagles (4-1) doubled their win total of last year by scoring 14 points in each of the second and third quarters against the Mariners.

Guillermo Flores led Olympian with two touchdowns. He scored on a 32-yard run to put the Eagles on the scoreboard and added a 10-yard run to make the score 21-0.

Ryan Van Nostrand passed 15 yards to Hollis Hulin to double Olympian's lead to 14-0 while Ricardo Garcia scored on a 30-yard interception return for the host's final points of the game.

Robert Chavira booted four PAT conversions. The win was the Eagles' third in a row following a 42-18 non-league loss to visiting Clairemont in the second week of the season.

Montgomery 14, Sweetwater 7
The Red Devils are improved, yes. The Aztecs have designs on unfinished business, yes.

Montgomery overcame a 7-0 Sweetwater lead with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to take one big step closer to nailing down this year's league title. Next up for the Aztecs (1-4 overall) is a home contest against Southwest, 60-0 losers to Castle Park last Friday.

The game figured to be close and it was, with both teams deadlocked in a scoreless tie at halftime.

Jose Martinez scored on a 45-yard run in the third quarter to put the Red Devils (0-1, 1-4) ahead by a touchdown. But Montgomery rallied in timely fashion to post its first victory of the season.

Quarterback Marvin Bobadilla threw a two-yard scoring pass to Johnny Mirando to tie the score and Diego Rodriguez later scored on a three-yard run, with Bobadilla supplying his second PAT kick conversion of the game, for the winning touchdown.

Rodriguez was a work horse throughout the game with 24 carries for 146 yards.

Barring any future upsets, Montgomery and Castle Park will likely meet in the final week of regular season play to determine this year's South Bay League champion.

Sweetwater plays at Mar Vista this Friday in an attempt to get back in contention for the league title.
