Posted May 22, 2008
South Bay League champion Mar Vista (24-10) ended its season with a loss to top-seeded La Jolla in last Saturday’s San Diego Section Division III semifinals but not before the Mariners eliminated defending division champion Valley Center in a marathon match-up in the quarterfinals.

Mar Vista opened the playoffs May 15 after receiving a first-round bye as the No. 4 seed in the division. The visiting Jaguars (24-11) won the opening two games by scores of 25-21 and 25-18 before the hosts rallied by capturing the final three games by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 15-11.

J.J. Snarponis and Zachary Penolio combined for 50 kills to lead the inspired comeback effort. Snarponis had 30 kills, 41 digs and three serving aces while Penolio had 20 kills.

Jordon Tarantino led Valley Center with 12 kills.

The deciding fifth game featured eight ties and seven lead changes.

The teams had previously split two tournament match-ups.

Mar Vista ended its season with a five-game loss in the semifinals. The Vikings prevailed by scores of 25-14, 25-17, 18-25, 24-26, 15-8 as the Mariners rallied from an 0-2 games deficit to force the tie-breaking fifth game.

Snarponis (11 kills, 12 digs) and Penolio (10 kills, 10 digs) led Mar Vista.

Mesa League champion Otay Ranch’s season came to a very competitive end on May 15 after bowing out of the San Diego Section Division I playoffs 20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 26-20, 15-11 to third-seeded Carlsbad. The Mustangs (26-11) won the opening two games before dropping the last three — all closely-contested.

Levi Dygert keyed Otay Ranch with 20 kills, followed by teammates Andre Fajardo with 16 kills, Ariel Pablico with 11 kills, Youssif El-Rakabawy with nine kills and Nick Morales with eight kills. El-Rakabawy led the Mustangs with 47 assists while Kyle Wulff had 47 digs.

Fajardo finished the five games with 21 digs while Pablico had 14 digs and Dygert and El-Rakabawy each had 13 digs.

Carlsbad (26-9) advanced to Wednesday’s Division I championship game after defeating second-seeded Torrey Pines in the semifinals.
Of the three Metro Conference teams had advanced to the quarterfinals with opening-round wins, none advanced. Besides Otay Ranch, Eastlake ended its season in the
Division I quarterfinals while Hilltop ended its season in the Division II quarterfinals.

Eastlake fell 25-4, 25-23, 25-20 to Torrey Pines on May 15

Hilltop fell 25-20, 25-20, 25-19 to host Valhalla on May 14. Cody Reeves and Christian Welch led the Lancers with nine and eight kills, respectively.
Mater Dei drew a bye to the Division IV quarterfinals and hosted Canyon Crest Academy, falling in three games 25-15, 25-13, 25-16.

Eastlake had advanced with a 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20 win against visiting Granite Hills on May 13 while Otay Ranch dusted off visiting Patrick Henry 25-17, 25-15, 25-20, also in opening-round playoff action.

Three Metro teams advance in CIF playoffs

It was time to “shout out” on Tuesday as the sixth-seeded Otay Ranch High School boys volleyball team defeated the visiting Patrick Henry Patriots 25-17, 25-15, 25-20 in the opening round of the San Diego Section Division I playoffs.

The win advanced the Mustangs to Thursday’s quarterfinal-round playoff game against third-seeded Carlsbad, with the winner advancing to Saturday’s semifinals.

The Division I championship game is scheduled May 21 at 7 p.m. at Canyon Crest Academy.

Mustang coach Tony Fajardo credited “the incredible support from our fans in the stands” for the home team’s impressive three-game sweep on Tuesday.
“The Ranch was rockin’!” Fajardo said.

Levi Dygert led Otay Ranch with 10 kills while Youssif El-Rakabawy totaled 20 assists and Kyle Wulff contributed 18 digs to the winning effort.

Fajardo credited the varsity players for “doing their jobs; playing together, supporting each other, staying positive and having fun.”

The Mustangs ended regular season play with a 25-10 record, 10-0 Mesa League record and their third consecutive league championship.

Patrick Henry entered Tuesday’s first-round playoff match 11-4 after a second-place finish in the Eastern League standings.

Noble, Ariel Pablico, Reachard Ricafrente (who sang the national anthem) and Wulff.

Otay Ranch was one of three Mesa League teams competing in Tuesday’s opening round.
