High school fall sports practices start Aug. 13

Posted Aug. 9, 2007
High school sports practices for the 2007-08 season start Monday, Aug. 13. Not long after that athletes will get their first chance to take the field in showcase events sponsored by the San Diego Section.

The fifth annual Kick Off Football Classic is scheduled Aug. 24-25. The second annual Dick Draz Boys Water Polo Classic is scheduled Aug. 25. The fourth annual Rally Classic (girls volleyball) is scheduled Aug. 27.
Official regular season competition starts the week after that.

Tickets are $6 for all three showcase events and are available through the San Diego Section office. Call (858) 292-8165 for more information.

Kick Off Classic
San Ysidro High School will serve as the host venue for the opening double header on Friday, Aug. 24. Horizon Christian will take on Metro Conference power Eastlake in the opening game at 5:30 p.m. while reigning Division V champion Christian will tackle host San Ysidro at 8 p.m.

The gridiron action moves eastward to Patrick Henry for two games on Saturday, Aug. 25. Division V power La Jolla County Day will battle Calexico at 5 p.m., followed by a 7:30 p.m. matchup pitting Division IV finalist Mission Bay against host Patrick Henry.

Officially classified as scrimmages, the events are run under game-like conditions and offer athletes — and fans — the opportunity to get a jump start on the season.

Midway Baptist and Foothills Chrisitan, both of which competed in the Pacific League last season, will be members of the newly created Southern League for 11-man football this season. The San Diego Section Board of Managers gave the OK to the new league at its June 5 meeting. Other charter members of the new circuit include Christian Life Academy, Sun Valley Charter and Julian.

Both Christian Life Academy and Sun Valley Charter competed as independents last season.

The board of managers also gave its stamp of approval for five teams to move up an enrollment division for 2006-07. Santa Fe Christian and Mater Dei (formerly Marian Catholic) will move from Division V to Division IV. St. Augustine and Cathedral Catholic will move from Division IV to Division III while Midway Baptist will move from 8-Man to Division V.

This year’s playoffs will begin with first round action in all divisions on Nov, 16, followed by quarterfinals on Nov. 23 and semifinals on Nov. 30. The playoffs will culminate with championship games in the top four enrollment divisions at Qualcomm Stadium on Dec. 7. The Division V title game will be played Dec. 8 at a site to be determined.

The Home Depot Center will once again host the three state championship bowl games on Dec. 15.

A total of seven South County teams qualified for the section playoffs last year, with Eastlake advancing to the Division II semifinals.

Cox Channel 4 San Diego will once again telecast a high school game of the week but the telecasts will no longer take place on Thursday nights. This year, the local sports channel will broadcast games on Friday, with rebroadcasts following Padres games when a conflict arises. Last season, Channel 4 San Diego telecast a predetermined schedule. This year, the station will select games for prime time exposure as the season progresses to ensure the best possible matchups.

Stay tuned.

Boys water polo
This year’s Draz Classic will take place at La Jolla High School. A total of 16 teams will be showcased in eight games. The lineup includes La Jolla Country Day vs. University City (8:50 a.m.), Valhalla vs. Patrick Henry (10 a.m.), El Camino vs. Mira Mesa (11:10 a.m.), Fallbrook vs. Eastlake (12:20 p.m.), Bishop’s vs. Granite Hills (1:30 p.m.), Rancho Buena Vista vs. Coronado (2:40 p.m.), Torrey Pines vs. Cathedral Catholic (3:50 p.m.) and Vista vs. La Jolla (5 p.m.).

The first date for scrimmages for all other teams is Aug. 27, with regular season competition starting Aug. 28. Last possible pre-playoff competition is Nov. 2, followed by playoff competition (in two divisions) Nov. 5-17.

The San Diego Section Board of Managers has approved the proposal to hold Southern California regional tournament competition in boys water polo (beginning in 2009) and girls water polo (beginning in 2010). Teams from the San Diego Section and Southern Section would participate.

Girls volleyball
This year’s Rally Classic will be held at West Hills High School. The schedule features Montgomery vs. Canyon Crest (4:45 p.m.), Valley Center vs. Calexico (5:55 p.m.), Santa Fe Christian vs. Granite Hills (7:05 p.m.) and Patrick Henry vs. West Hills (8:15 p.m.).

The first possible regular season competition for teams is Aug. 28 and the last possible pre-playoff competition is Nov. 1. The playoffs once again will be conducted in five enrollment divisions. The pairings meeting is scheduled Nov. 3, followed by on-court competition Nov. 6-18.

Finals sites under consideration include Westview, Cathedral Catholic and Canyon Crest Academy high schools, the UCSD main gym and SDSU’s Peterson Gym.
