2010 San Diego Section playoffs
Football season has upsetting ending for East County teams

Posted Dec. 7, 2010
The uniforms of the winning team in Monday’s San Diego Section Division II championship game at Qualcomm Stadium sported green trim. But they didn’t belong to the top-seeded Helix Highlanders. Nor were the uniforms of the second-seeded Steele Canyon Cougars anywhere in sight in the 70,000-seat Mission Valley facility.

The 2010 high school football playoffs were filled by upsets, illustrated by last week’s semifinals. Of the 10 games played Dec. 2 (Division I through Division IV) and Dec. 3 (Division V), the lower-seeded team came away victorious a jaw-dropping seven times.

The higher-seeded Highlanders and Cougars were among the victims.

Instead, fourth-seeded Oceanside captured its seventh consecutive CIF championship by routing third-seeded Mission Hills 47-10.

The Pirates (10-3) defeated Helix, 24-17, in the semifinals while Mission Hills (10-3) ended Steele Canyon’s season with a 24-14 upset victory.

The Scotties finished the season 11-1; the Cougars ended an otherwise stellar campaign 9-3.

The fourth-seeded Christian Patriots (6-6) were eliminated by top-seeded Bishop’s (12-0) in the Division V semifinals. The undefeated Knights will play third-seeded Francis Parker (6-6) Friday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. at Mesa College in the division championship game.

Of the four championship games played Monday at Qualcomm Stadium, the Division I and Division II match-ups featured the third and fourth seeds battling in each game, while the Division III title game paired the third-seeded team against the fifth-seeded team. The top-seeded team did advance to the Division IV championship game but was upended by the third-seeded team.

How about that for parity to cap the 2010 pigskin season?

In the Division I final, No. 3 Vista (12-1) defeated No. 4 Mira Mesa (7-6) by a score of 33-21.

In the Division III title tilt, No. 3 Cathedral Catholic (8-5) stung No. 5 Lincoln (7-7) by a score of 24-7.

In the Division IV championship game, No. 3 Madison (12-1) upset No. 1 Valley Center (12-1) by a score of 40-14.

Oceanside and Cathedral Catholic both repeated as division champions — the title was the fourth in a row for the Dons — while Vista made amends for its title game loss to Eastlake last year. The CIF title was the first in school history for Madison, which finished runner-up in the Division IV final two years ago.

Oceanside was making its 17th consecutive semifinal appearance and the Pirates plundered the Highlanders’ ship for two defensive touchdowns — a 48-yard interception return by Adam Francis and a 27-yard fumble return by T.J. Sunia — to hold up as the margin of victory.

The previously undefeated Scotties (ranked second in the section in the regular season) started the game in a 10-0 hole but stormed back to lead 14-10 on a 35-yard scoring pass from Brandon Lewis to Austin Gonzalez and a one-yard TD run by Darrion Hancock. But a 39-yard scoring run by Noah Tarrant put Oceanside back in front to stay.

Tarrant scored a scintillating six touchdowns in Monday’s championship game.

“We were the best team at the end,” Pirate coach John Carroll said succinctly.

Steele Canyon started off its semifinal contest against the visiting Grizzlies down 14-0 and could never recover. Brandon Watson scored both Steele Canyon touchdowns. Mission Hills led 1ed 17-7 at halftime.

Meanwhile, Christian dropped another high-scoring contest — this time, 47-21 — to Bishop’s in a game played at La Jolla High School. Shane Dillon passed for 230 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the setback, the second against the Knights this season.

Bishop’s led 20-15 at halftime but pulled away in the fourth quarter. Tyrone Sauls scored his 31st touchdown of the season for Christian.

Bishop’s and Francis Parker will be meeting in the division championship game for the third consecutive year, with Parker holding a 2-0 edge in the previous two title match-ups.

Championship Monday
Cathedral Catholic aptly demonstrated that it’s not how a team starts the season in September but how it finishes the season in December that counts the most. The Dons, playing inarguably the toughest schedule this season in the section, were just 1-4 at the halfway point of the season before building momentum with victories in eight of their final nine games, including three consecutive playoff wins.

Jonny Martin led Cathedral Catholic with 163 rushing yards and two touchdowns in Monday’s redemption finale.

Madison roared to the Division IV title on the arm of Chase Knox, who threw for three touchdowns and a career-high 385 passing yards. Jeremy Hutchison (71 yards), Kevon Mitchell (18 yards) and Desaan Hardwick (47 yards) all caught scoring passes for the Warhawks, which also was boosted by a 48-yard kick-off return by Mitchell. Madison led just 14-7 at halftime but tamed their higher-seeded foe with a 26-7 second-half showing. The Warhawks avenged their only loss of in regular season play by thumping second-seeded Olympian, 48-7, in the semifinals.

Vista opened the season as the top-ranked team in the section and likely moved back to the top after chilling the upset-minded Marauders on the strength of 285 rushing yards. Mira Mesa, which dethroned top-seeded Eastlake, 20-0, in the semifinals, was making its first trip to the stadium since 1983.

Lincoln was among the upset winners in the semifinals, knocking off top-seeded St. Augustine, 29-26, in a game played at Mesa College.

With the upset win over Valley Center, Madison is hoping for a State Bowl berth in the small schools game. Pairings will be announced on Sunday.

First round produces some playoff shockers

Every year it seems there are a string of upsets in the opening round of the San Diego Section football playoffs, with at least one road team coming away with a victory in each enrollment division. This season proved to be no different, as six visiting teams had deliriously happy bus rides home to punctuate Friday's first round action.

There was at least one upset in each division, with two road teams securing victories in the Division IV bracket (Mission Bay and Imperial) and one each in Division I (Otay Ranch), Division II (Mt. Carmel), Division III (Point Loma) and Division V (Mountain Empire).

Higher-seeded teams having their seasons end abruptly included eighth-seeded El Camino in Division I (44-12 loss to ninth-seeded Otay Ranch), eighth-seeded Valhalla in Division II (27-23 loss to ninth-seeded Mt. Carmel), seventh-seeded Mar Vista in Division III (21-7 loss to 10th-seeded Point Loma), eighth-seeded Palo Verde (20-14 loss to ninth-seeded Mission Bay) and sixth-seeded Santana (18-7 loss to 11th-seeded Imperial in Division IV and seventh-seeded Foothills Christian (42-14 loss to 10th-seeded Mountain Empire) in Division V.

The 20 first-round survivors (four in each division) join the 20 teams byed to the quarterfinals as elimination play resumes Friday, Nov. 26.

Top-seeded teams entering the fray include Eastlake (10-0) in Division I, Helix (10-0) in Division II, St. Augustine (8-2) in Division III, Valley Center (10-0) in Division IV and Bishop's (10-0) in Division V.

Granite Hills (5-6) capped its season with its first playoff appearance since 2006 but the Eagles were no match for the sixth-seeded Poway Titans (7-4), losing a high-scoring affair 42-33. Poway took command early with a 21-0 lead.

Cory Lockman scored on two short runs and also fired an eight-yard scoring pass to Michael Millien. Frantz Laraque got the East County visitors on the scoreboard via a four-yard run in the second quarter while teammate Caleb Kestel scored on a two-yard fumble return in the fourth quarter as Granite Hills lit up the scoreboard with 26 points in the final frame.

El Capitan (5-5-1) could not overcome six turnovers in its 30-19 loss at Southwest El Centro. The Grossmont Valley League co-champion Vaqueros carried a five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) into the game against the Imperial Valley League co-champion Eagles.

Dakota Furr rushed for 219 yards and two touchdowns for El Capitan, which faced a 20-0 deficit early in the game.

Where are they now?
Ex-Norseman Pete Thomas makes homecoming

Former Valhalla standout Pete Thomas won the head-to-head match-up against former El Capitan star quarterback Ryan Lindley but the host San Diego State Aztecs eliminated the Colorado State Rams from bowl game contention via a 24-19 Mountain West Conference victory Nov. 6 at Qualcomm Stadium.

Thomas, Colorado State’s true freshman signal-caller, passed for 266 yards, one interception and one touchdown.

Lindley finished with his lowest offensive output of the season by passing for 171 yards, two interceptions and one touchdown.

Thomas opened the game with completions in his first five attempts while leading the Rams to a pair of field goals and an early 6-0 lead.

Lindley’s nine-yard scoring pass to Brandon Sullivan gave the Aztecs (7-2, 4-1 in MWC play) a 24-13 advantage early in the fourth quarter.

But Thomas completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Zac Pagua in the waning stages of the game to narrow the Aztec lead to five points. But the visitors could not get within a field goal after failing on the ensuing two-point conversion.

The game proved to be a back-and-forth affair between two evenly matched opponents.

Sullivan scored on a one-yard plunge to help put the hosts up 7-6 with 34 seconds left in the first half.

SDSU took a 10-6 lead on a 31-yard field goal to start the third quarter. The Rams (3-7, 2-3 in MWC play) then took a 13-10 lead on an 88-yard fumble return by x Sisson midway through the third quarter.

But Ronnie Hillman, SDSU’s true freshman, responded with a 26-yard TD run with 1:32 left in the quarter to put the hosts back in front 17-13.

The Aztecs match up against MWC leader TCU (10-0, 6-0 in conference play) on Nov. 13 in Texas. The Horned Frogs, ranked third in the nation, remained undefeated on the season with a dominating 47-7 victory against seventh-ranked Utah (8-1, 5-1).

Playoff picture firming up for section pigskin teams
The top 12 teams in each division qualify for the playoffs. First-round games are scheduled Nov. 19, followed by the quarterfinal round on Nov. 26. There is a short turnaround on the semifinals (Dec. 2) and finals (Dec. 6 at Qualcomm Stadium) for teams in the largest four enrollment divisions.

Division I
Eight teams in Division I have winning records and three more teams have a chance to finish .500. One additional team has at least three wins. Both Eastlake and Torrey Pines remain undefeated — each with 9-0 records.

Torrey Pines is in line to win the Palomar League championship while Eastlake is in line to win the Metro-Pacific League title. Should the Avocado East League title go to Mission and the Avocado West League title go to Oceanside, both of which are in the Division II enrollment division, that could leave as many as 10 at-large berths to be filled among Division I teams this season.

Eastlake and sixth-ranked Vista (8-1) paired up in last year’s championship game and Torrey Pines is a legitimate contender this season. Other teams contending for Division I playoff berths include Grossmont (7-2), Poway (6-3), San Diego (5-3-1), Otay Ranch (5-4), Granite Hills (5-4), Mira Mesa (4-5), El Camino (4-5), Carlsbad (4-5) and San Pasqual (3-6).

Should Otay Ranch finish 6-4 with a season ending win over visiting Chula Vista (2-7), the Mustangs should be in line to secure a first round home game. The Spartans join Rancho Buena Vista (2-7). Fallbrook (1-7-1), Escondido (1-7-1), Calexico (1-7) and Sweetwater (1-8) as long shots to make the playoffs.

Division II
Eight teams in Division II have winning records and four more teams have a chance to finish .500. Two additional teams have at least three wins. Helix is the lone undefeated team in the division, which may be the most competitive among any this season in the section. It would seem that any of the top five ranked teams in the division — #2 Helix (9-0), #4 Oceanside (7-2), #7 Steele Canyon (8-1), #8 Mission Hills (7-2) and #11 La Costa Canyon (6-3)— could win the title.

Bonita Vista (3-7) and Hilltop (4-5) both remain playoff hopefuls but likely are contending for the bottom available spots. Potentially standing in the way, however, are Rancho Bernardo (7-2), Scripps Ranch (5-3-1), Morse (6-4), Mt. Carmel (4-5), Orange Glen (4-5), Valhalla (4-5), Hoover (3-5-1) and Westview (2-7).

Teams that appear out include Patrick Henry, San Ysidro and El Cajon Valley — all with 1-8 records.

Division III
Eleven teams in Division III have winning or .500 records and four more teams have a chance to finish .500. Two additional teams have at least three wins. It appears that 17 of the 19 teams in the division continue to relish playoff berths at this late stage of the season.

Top teams, not in any specific order, include defending champion Cathedral Catholic (5-4), St. Augustine (7-2), Mt. Miguel (7-1-1), El Capitan (4-4-1) and Ramona (4-5). Point Loma (6-3), Southwest El Centro (6-3), Central Union (5-4), Kearny (4-5), San Marcos (4-5), University City (4-5), Lincoln (3-6) and West Hills (3-6) are all bidding with four South County teams for playoff berths. It’s likely that several deserving teams will be left out of the mix.

Cathedral Catholic and St. Augustine will play for the Eastern League title while Mt. Miguel holds the playoff tie-breaker over El Capitan in the Grossmont Valley League. Mar Vista appears to have the Metro-South Bay League title in hand.

Both Monte Vista (2-7) and Serra (1-8) appear out of contention.

Division IV
Nine teams in Division IV have winning records and one more has a chance to finish .500. Valley Center (9-0) remains undefeated and the top-ranked team in the division. Olympian and Madison, both at 8-1, follow the Jaguars in the rankings poll. Other contenders include Brawley (7-2), Coronado (7-2), Santa Fe Christian (6-3), Imperial (5-3-1), Santana (5-3-1), Escondido Charter (5-4) and Palo Verde (4-5).

Valley Center, (Valley League), Olympian (Pacific League), Madison (Western League) and Coronado (Central League) have all clinched at least a co-championship in their respective leagues. Brawly is currently tied for the lead in the Imperial Valley League.

Mission Bay, last year’s division champion, appears to have resurrected its playoff hopes after a 0-7 start with consecutive victories against Hoover and La Jolla (2-7, also in Division IV).

Mater Dei (1-8) is hoping its early season win against Del Norte (2-7) might be enough to get in as the last team. That remains up in the air.

Crawford, which will finish as the section’s only 0-10 team, is definitely out after forfeiting the rest of its season due to a lack of varsity players while Clairemont is 1-8.

Division V
Eleven teams in Division V have winning records and four more teams have a chance to finish .500. Bishop’s, which is led by Chula Vista resident Joey Moreno at quarterback, is 9-0 and in line to win this year’s Coastal League title. Francis Parker (4-5) was the favorite early in the season but has suffered several surprising setbacks this season, including a 20-0 loss to Horizon Christian (5-3) on Oct. 29.

Moreno is averaging 126 passing yards per game for the Knights.

The Division V semifinals are Dec. 3 and the championship game is Dec. 10 at Mesa College.

Other top teams in the division include Tri-City Christian (8-1), La Jolla Country Day (6-3), The Rock Academy (6-3), El Cajon Christian (5-4), Holtville (5-4), Mountain Empire (4-5), Army-Navy Academy (4-5) and Calipatria (4-5).

Tri-City Christian has clinched at least a co-championship in the Coastal Pacific League while Bishop’s can wrap up the Coastal League title with another win.

Foothills Christian (5-0 in league, 5-2 overall) edged Calvin Christian (4-1, 5-4), 32-20, last week to secure the Southern League championship title. That leaves few precious at-large berths among the division’s smaller schools to fight for.

Ocean View Christian Academy and Chula Vista Calvary Christian Academy are the two South County teams looking to gain a foothold in the division.

Ocean View looked to have a spot locked up as an independent after rolling to a 6-0 start. But losses to the San Diego Jewish Academy (2-4-1) and San Pasqual Academy (2-6) have since placed the Patriots’ post-season hopes in jeopardy.

OVCA put its name back in the proverbial hat with a key 22-20 non-league victory against visiting Borrego Springs last Friday. But so did the Chula Vista Calvary Christian Academy Royal Knights after blowing out the SDJA, 43-0, on Saturday.

The Royal Knights (2-4 in Southern League play, 5-4 overall) have lost to Julian (2-6-1) and Borrego Springs (2-7-1) in league play as well as to Foothills Christian and Calvin Christian.

As a fitting regular season finale, both the Patriots and Royal Knights meet in a non-league game on Friday, with the winner perhaps securing the final playoff berth in the division. Both teams being admitted would be a bonus to the South Bay.

Jesse Johnson caught a 10-yard scoring pass from Andres Perez and also caught a 65-yard scoring pass from Zack Balich to help OVCA, playing with just 12 players suited up, snap a two-game losing streak. Raul Rodriguez scored on a 29-yard run to knot the score against the Rams at 14-14 at halftime.

The Royal Knights scored in every quarter against the Lions (1-3-1 in league play), led by Alex Howard with two rushing touchdowns, single TDs by Nick Seydel, Tony Madrid, Oscar Gonzales and Justin Harrison and a 35-yard field goal by Hector Martinez.

Harrison rushed for 172 yards, Howard gained 163 yards and Gonzales powered to 120 yards to control the ball on the ground as the Royal Knight racked up 474 rushing yards. Trace Scheckel passed for 93 yards as Calvary Christian amassed 567 total offensive yards.

The Royal Knights stymied SDJA with six picks, including two by Collin Angeles and Howard and one each by Jose-Noel Rocha and Harrison.

Bottom line
As many as half a dozen to a dozen South County teams could be included in this year’s playoff pool. Suffice it to say, local prep coaches will be keeping their fingers crossed heading into Saturday’s playoff selection meeting.

Eight-man
Kuyper Prep of National City improved to 5-1 in eight-man play after ripping Vista Calvary Christian, 50-0, in a Citrus League playoff game on Nov. 6. Warner Springs topped Maranatha Christian, 52-6, in the other semifinal to advance to the championship game on Nov. 12.

Kuyper Prep previously defeated Warner Spring, 22-16, in league play on Oct. 8.

#2 Scotties continue to raise the bar in undefeated season

Each week the bar seems to be raised a little higher for the Helix High School football team and so far each week, the Highlanders have responded to remain the Eat County’s lone undefeated team. The Scotties received their toughest challenge thus far in Grossmont Hills League play Friday (Oct. 29) against the visiting Valhalla Norsemen.

The Norsemen took a gritty 7-0 lead on a fourth-down touchdown pass from Frank Foster to Jevon Hasten. Valhalla continued to lead, 7-6, at halftime after Helix quarterback Brandon Lewis scored on a three-yard run.

The Highlanders (8-0 overall, 3-0 in league play) had all the momentum in the second half, however, as the hosts tacked on 27 more unanswered points to make a statement with a 33-7 victory.

Darrion Hancock scored on a four-yard run, Sam Meredith caught a two-point conversion and Lewis tossed touchdown passes to Cameron Lee (36 yards), Jimmy Pruitt (23 yards) and Austin Gonzales (six yards).

Gary Thompson keyed the Helix defense with an interception and two sacks.

With Vista’s loss to Mission Hills, the Scotties now move up to No. 2 in the San Diego Sportswriters/Sportscasters weekly rankings poll (behind new No. 1 Eastlake, also 8-0).

The Highlanders next play at Granite Hills (5-3, 1-2) on Friday, Nov. 5, before hosting seventh-ranked Steele Canyon (7-1, 3-0) on Nov. 12 in what is shaping up as the Grossmont Hills League championship game.

Steele Canyon shut out West Hills, 42-0, in league play on Oct. 29 behind three touchdown passes and one rushing score by quarterback Brad Boehmke. Jake Wragg also scored twice for the Cougars, who led 28-0 at halftime.

What likely will stand up as the Grossmont Valley League championship game will be played Friday, Nov. 5, as the ninth-ranked Mt. Miguel Matadors (7-1, 2-0) hosts the rampaging El Capitan Vaqueros (4-4, 3-0). The Vaqueros rode to their third consecutive victory to resurrect both their league championship and playoff hopes by defeating El Cajon Valley (1-7, 0-2) by a score of 55-13 on Oct. 29.

Dakota Furr scored three touchdowns and Joshua Murphy scored twice to help pace El Capitan, which put the game away with 34 points in the third quarter after holding a 14-7 halftime lead.

Extra points
Grossmont (7-1, 2-1) rebounded from its loss to Helix by edging Granite Hills, 21-14, in GHL play on Oct. 29. Desean Waters rushed for two touchdowns and also threw one scoring pass to lead the Foothillers. Gilbert Perez (18-yard scoring pass) and Frantz Laraque (36-yard run) accounted for both of the Eagles’ TDs.

Santana (5-3-1, 1-2) moved above the .500 mark with its 23-8 GVL victory against visiting Monte Vista (1-7, 0-2) as Zach Breidt connected with T.D. Gross on a two-yard scoring pass and Jonathan Butler scored on fumble recoveries of 28 and 35 yards.

Two East County unbeatens set to tangle again on the gridiron

And then there were two: the Helix Highlanders and Grossmont Foothillers. Barring a tie in Friday’s Grossmont Hills League showdown between the two teams, there should only be one undefeated high school football team left in East County.

Two weeks ago, four Grossmont Conference teams sported undefeated records. Helix ended Mt. Miguel’s 5-0 start with a 37-7 non-league victory in front of nearly 4,000 fans in Spring Valley on Oct. 8 while Santana saw its 4-0-1 start the season ended in a 23-21 non-league loss at Madison the same night.

Helix is 6-0 and ranked third in the San Diego Section (first among Division II teams) while Grossmont is also 6-0 and ranked ninth in the section (fourth among Division I teams). Kick off is 7 p.m. at Helix High School.

Defense should highlight the teams’ high profile encounter. Grossmont is coming off a key 13-7 victory against visiting Valhalla on the strength of 10 sacks against the pass happy Norsemen while Helix overwhelmed host West Hills, 41-7, in its Grossmont Hills League opener, also on Oct. 15.

Perfect ending
The Foothillers rallied from a 7-0 deficit on the strength of 13 unanswered points and a defensive second-half shutout.

The most important stop of the game registered by Grossmont’s defense was a two-yard loss by Dylan Cooper to snuff out a fourth-down play from the Foothillers’ two-yard line.

Franklin Foster gave Valhalla (3-3 overall) the early lead on a 30-yard scoring pass to Jevon Hasten. The Foothillers offense then went to work as Jordan Reece booted field goals of 32 and 43 yards and quarterback Desean Waters broke into the end zone on a two-yard run in the third quarter.

Helix scored four offensive touchdowns and two defensive touchdowns in muzzling the Wolf Pack (3-3 overall). The Scotties broke away with 28 unanswered points in the second quarter, led by two scores by Michael Adkins – one on a 23-yard run and one on a six-yard pass from Brandon Lewis, who also scored on a nine-yard run.

Ernest Shipley recovered a blocked punt in the end zone and teammate Derek Maeva returned an intercepted pass 50 yards for another touchdown to spark Helix’s defense.

Extra points
Seventh-ranked Steele Canyon celebrated homecoming with a 49-16 victory against visiting Granite Hills to kick off GHL play. Jake Wragg scored four touchdowns to lead the Cougars (5-1 overall). The Eagles, who were led by Frantz Laraque’s 147 rushing yards, dropped to 4-2.

Mt. Miguel, ranked 13th in the section, kicked off Grossmont Valley League play with a resounding 63-0 victory at El Cajon Valley. Derrick Dunn led the Matadors (6-1) with four touchdowns. The Braves (0-6) remain winless on the season.

El Capitan resurrected its playoff hopes by handing host Santana its second consecutive loss as the Vaqueros (2-4 overall) claimed a resilient 40-28 GVL victory behind four touchdowns by Dakota Furr. Landon Lozoya scored three touchdowns – all on passes -- for he Sultans (4-2-1 overall) in the loss.

Foothills Christian improved to 2-0 in Southern League play after defeating visiting Borrego Springs, 34-22, on the strength of 363 rushing yards and four touchdowns by Spencer George.
